A flourishing hub of arts and culture and a gateway to the great outdoors, Denver is the vibrant heart of the state of Colorado. From museums, theatres and the nation’s second largest performing arts centre – Denver Performing Arts Complex – through to sports venues, great restaurants and nightlife, Denver is the perfect destination for a fulfilling city break, with something to please everyone. Best of all, the city is overlooked by the spectacular Rocky Mountains, within easy reach of their lush forests and inviting National Parks.
With a hire car you’ll be able to make the most of your break by venturing beyond the Denver city limits to other Colorado destinations such as Pueblo (an hour and 50 minutes’ drive). Here you can visit the Center for American Values, dedicated to the astonishing stories of heroic Medal of Honor recipients. There’s no better place to discover the true meaning of being an American.
Fly into Denver International Airport and from there it’s only a 50-minute drive southwest into the centre of Denver.
With a hire car at your disposal, you can explore other cities across the state such as Colorado City, a further 20 minutes due south from Pueblo. A city in name only, this broadly spread community in the Greenhorn Valley enjoys an unusually warm climate, making it possible to play golf here year round. En route, you’ll also pass by Old Colorado City, a hugely enjoyable National Historic District in the city of Colorado Springs.
Choose from a wide selection of hire car providers in Denver to suit every budget and requirement, from Alamo and Avis to Enterprise and Hertz.
Denver boasts some particularly beautiful natural landscapes, all easy to access via hire car, enabling you to enjoy sensational hiking, climbing, hiking and rafting – or skiing, dependent on the season of your visit. Within the city, you must visit the Art District on Santa Fe and the River North Art District, or ‘RiNo’. And don’t miss January’s uproarious National Western Stock Show, celebrating the city’s ranching heritage.
Beyond Denver, your hire car can take you to other exciting destinations such as Fort Collins (an hour and 10 minutes north), where the thriving local brewery scene is well worth investigating, especially if you’re drawn to the Great American Beer Festival in Denver in autumn. Meanwhile, Boulder is only 30 miles away via US-36, right at the foot of the Rockies, most famous for the five jagged local peaks known as the Flatirons.
Driving in Denver, like much of the US, is largely straightforward, with wide lanes and simple road layouts. In the wide open spaces of Colorado, yours can often be the only car in sight! Cars are left-hand drive, so you’ll be driving on the right-hand side of the road. Unlike in the UK, you can overtake on both sides, which can be a little unnerving at first. Most American cars are automatic, so remember to request a stick shift if you would prefer one.
