Copenhagen has been at the heart of Scandinavian cool for some time now. The city’s beautiful people and stylish design culture are hugely appealing, and the surrounding countryside offers both rugged landscapes and laidback charm. With car hire in Copenhagen you can head to Amager Beach and glance out to sea at the windmill park and the Oresund bridge that links Denmark to Sweden. The Kalvebod Fælled, a huge meadow land that is home to cows, deer, horses and many wading birds, is also about 15 minutes drive from the city centre.
Copenhagen Airport is seven miles from the city centre, a drive of about 15 minutes. There is a metro station in Terminal 3, which runs every four to six minutes during the day and at 15–20-minute intervals at night.
To arrange cheap car hire in Copenhagen city centre head to the Kobenhavn V area where many of the big brands are based. Driving in the city can be tricky thanks to the ubiquitous bikes that rule the roads here.
Avis, Europcar, Budget and Sixt are among the brands that can supply a hire car at Copenhagen Airport. The airport’s car rental centre is a short walk from Terminal 2.
With a rental car in Copenhagen you could take a day trip to Malmo in Sweden, which is just 25 miles away, a drive of about 40 minutes. The two cities are linked by the nine-mile long Oresund bridge, which offers spectacular views during the crossing. Malmo is a youthful and multicultural city but the buildings are historic - like something from a postcard. Gamla Vaster is the city’s old town and a great place to get a coffee, while the Ribersborgsstranden is a modern and attractive seafront and park area. Helsingborg is another Swedish city within easy reach. Just an hour from Copenhagen, this coastal city has a busy harbour area and a boardwalk, which is full of sunbathers when the weather allows.
Back in Denmark, why not head to Roskilde, a city 30 minutes west of Copenhagen by car. The most popular attraction here is the Viking Ship Museum, where five original 11th century Viking vessels are displayed. There is also a boatyard, where archaeologists piece together full-size reconstructions of some of the ancient boats.
The city of Koge on the southeastern coast is 40 minutes from Copenhagen by car. Fishing is popular here thanks to the picturesque bay area and a number of lakes nearby. Otherwise enjoy the historic architecture. There are a number of well-preserved half-timbered houses that date back to the Renaissance period, including Denmark's oldest half-timbered house from 1527.
Take care if you drive in the city centre, the roads here are full of cyclists. If you take you hire car over the bridge into Sweden check your insurance documents - you may not be covered over the border.
