It’s hard to go wrong in a city that is famous for beer and chocolate. Bruges is full of delicious-looking shop windows and heady aromas and has a great cafe and pub culture. Take out a rental car in Bruges and discover the rest of Belgium.

Brussels and Antwerp are both about 60 miles away, the Dutch border is just a stone’s throw and you can be at the stunning beaches of Belgium’s north coast in 20 minutes.

How to get to and around Bruges?

Fly in to Ostend-Bruges International Airport, a 30-minute drive from the city centre, or opt for Brussels Airport, which is just over an hour’s drive of 70 miles.

Must-sees within an easy drive of Bruges

The buildings that line Bruges’ canals are both imposing and postcard pretty. Steep-sloped roofs and red tiles punctuate the skyline while looking downwards it’s all cobblestone streets and city squares. Ditch the hire car for the day and take a boat trip to discover Bruges’ hidden gems from the canal - courtyards, gardens and impressive homes can all be seen from the water. Then head into one of the numerous antique shops or visit the Lace Centre to find out more about the area’s history.

Just 30 miles from Bruges, a drive of 40 minutes, is the pretty city of Ghent. Medieval spires and towers pepper the skyline, while the bustling port area of Graslei it the perfect spot for cafes and hours spent people-watching. You could also head to Belgium’s capital city Brussels, which is a one hour and 10 minute drive from Bruges, or 60 miles. Step into the surreal at the Magritte Museum or climb inside one of the shiny spheres of the Atomium. Just half an hour’s drive east from Brussels is Leuven, the country’s beer capital. Beer flows fairly freely all over Belgium, but nowhere more so than in Leuven. There are a number of breweries in the city, many of which offer tours and tasting events. There are also many beer festivals throughout the year.

The port city of Antwerp is 55 miles east of Bruges, an hour and 15 minutes’ drive along the E40 and E17. Visit the home of Peter Paul Rubens, the famous Baroque painter, or head to the botanical gardens for some peace and quiet before hitting the stylish shops in the fashion district.
