Sardinia is an incredibly appealing holiday destination – an island of white sand beaches and blue-green waters that boasts all kinds of adventures and experiences. The medieval Sardinian city of Alghero makes for a particularly charming travel spot, with its 16th-century sea walls and beautiful old churches. The city is also the perfect place to hire your own vehicle and enjoy a relaxed driving holiday. To explore your car rental options in the city, use the Expedia search tool.
Sardinia has three international airports, one of which is located on the outskirts of Alghero, making it a very accessible holiday destination. Known as Alghero-Fertilia Airport (AHO), it is situated just six miles north of the city centre and is an excellent place to pick up your own rental vehicle. At the airport, you’ll find a selection of competitively priced car hire agencies, including Sixt and Budget. Pick up a rental vehicle here, and you can drive into the centre of Alghero in less than 20 minutes.
For travellers who are not flying into Alghero Airport or who would like to hire a car in Alghero itself, there are several vehicle rental options once you arrive in the town. You’ll find several agencies located along Via Giuseppe Garibaldi and Via Vittorio Emanuele. The city centre is very easy to navigate by car, with two free parking lots to take advantage of, one of which can be found next to the marina. Of course, the beauty of hiring your own car is that you also have the freedom to travel out of the city, visiting nearby attractions and towns.
If you do rent your own vehicle whilst in Alghero, you must make time for a visit to Porto Conte Regional Park. Located 13 miles west of the city, this park is just 25 minutes away by car. This wooded peninsula juts out into sea, and borders a protected marine area. You can come here to hike, climb, bird-watch and take a tour of the atmospheric sea caves. Alternatively, if you’re just seeking some time in the sun, the area also boasts a beautiful stretch of beach at Spiaggia di Mugoni.
If you’re looking to explore the region around Alghero by car, then you have several choices when it comes to driving routes. The charming Sassari is just 22 miles northeast of Alghero. The second largest city in Sardinia, it is home to several excellent museums and a charming central piazza. Porto Torres is also only 22 miles from Alghero, and can be reached by heading north from the city on the SP42. There, you can catch a ferry to the neighbouring French island of Corsica and its beautiful National Park.
If you're a nature lover, you will also want to head up to the Stintino peninsula, about an hour's car journey from Alghero. There, you can swim at the gorgeous La Pelosa beach or hop on a ferry to stunning Asinara National Park – keep an eye out for Asinara's native donkeys, which are almost all albinos!
