The city of Akron in northern Ohio is a cultural hotspot. Home to the Ohio Conservatory of Ballet, the Akron Symphony Orchestra, and a number of theatres, there is plenty to see for cultured visitors. Sports fans can also rest easy, as there is a modern baseball stadium in downtown Akron and 40 miles north are the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Cleveland Indians. If nature is your thing then hire a rental car in Akron and explore the beautiful Cuyahoga Valley. See if you can spot a beaver dam in one of the marshes and enjoy the various waterfalls that decorate the landscape.
Fly in to Akron Fulton International Airport, which is just seven miles from the city centre, or try Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, which is just over 40 miles north of Akron, a drive of about 45 minutes. If you are travelling by car then the I-76 runs from east to west and the I-77 is an easy route north and south.

Get a hire car in Akron, this is a sprawling city and so much of what it has to offer lies outside the centre. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park, just 20 minutes away by car, has walking, cycling and pretty views in abundance. There are a number of waterfalls in the area, including the 65-foot Brandywine Falls, which is one of the most spectacular. The Ohio and Erie canal towpath trail can also be found here, along with the Canal Exploration Centre. Akron was built on industry thanks to this canal. Listen to the tales of canal boat captains and try on their uniforms to find out about the huge impact this waterway had on this part of northern Ohio during the 1800s. Otherwise, if you want to see where the locals live then try Medina, which is half an hour west of Akron, a journey of 22 miles, or Kent, which is 14 miles to the east.
Nearly 40 miles north of Akron is Cleveland. Nestled on the shores of lake Erie, there are a number of pretty beaches to explore. Kayaking and paddle boarding are popular hobbies here and there are numerous water sports centres along the coast. Cleveland is an active city full of sports fans. The Cleveland Cavaliers offer basketball, while the Cleveland Indians supply the baseball.
And if you still have the appetite for more sport then head 24 miles south on the I-77 to Canton, home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This interactive museum is perfect for American football fans or those who want to learn about US sporting culture. Historic kits, player profiles and a room full of busts of the country’s most cherished players are all here.
Akron is a busy working city but it is easy to navigate. The I-77, I-71 and I-76 are some of the main routes in and around the city, giving it great links to the rest of Ohio.
