Occupying a five-hectare plot on the eastern edge of Toulouse, Cite de l’espace is a popular museum and theme park which celebrates the wonders of the universe and mankind’s exploration of space.
Opened in 1997, Cite de l’espace has proved to be a major attraction for both adults and children alike, with a vast array of exhibits that includes actual spacecraft and pieces of a fallen Martian meteorite, along with genuine moonstones, astronaut uniforms and other space memorabilia. There’s also an IMAX cinema and a planetarium, as well as a full-scale model of the Ariane 5 rocket, and a building about Australia which houses a second 280-seat planetarium called the Stellarium.
If you want to stay near to Cite de l’espace, there are several options close-at-hand, including a number of budget hotels directly opposite the park. Further good-value choices can be found just off the main A61 road, which runs adjacent, and some other alternatives are a short distance south, close to the National Space Studies Centre and the École nationale de l'aviation civile, or ENAC, which delivers civil aeronautics training for engineers, pilots and air traffic controllers.
The theme park and museum is well-served by Toulouse’s public transport network, so it’s easy to get in and out of the city centre if you’re staying in a Cite de l’espace hotel. Buses run frequently, as does the Metro, with the Ramonville and Jolimont stops both servicing the attraction. If you’re driving, Cite de l’espace is just 15 minutes from downtown Toulouse, or 25 minutes if you’re coming directly from Toulouse-Blagnac Airport.
Other aviation or science-focused attractions in Toulouse include tours of the massive Airbus factory near the airport in Blagnac. Or for something more historic and on a much smaller scale, pay a visit to the Toulouse Observatory in the Jardin de l’Observatoire.
Whether you’re a plane spotter, a science geek, or travelling with space-mad kids, a hotel near the Cite de l’espace will put you right in the heart of the action.
