Flights to Holyhead
For a unique getaway, why not book a flight to Holyhead? Situated in the Welsh county of Anglesey, it is close to Snowdonia National Park and also popular with those looking for a short getaway before they travel to Ireland via Holyhead’s active seaport.
Anglesey Airport is a mere hop, skip and a jump away from Holyhead, and Liverpool Airport is also nearby. With two airports so close, booking a flight to Holyhead could hardly be easier. There are very few places in the world where you can immerse yourself in briny island air, and then get lost on snowy mountain peaks, all in the same day.
Airports Close to Holyhead
Anglesey Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport are the two closest airports Holyhead, with Anglesey located just six miles away. While this makes it the most geographically convenient airport when flying to Holyhead, the airport only serves a single airline with flights from Cardiff and Norwich. You may find it more convenient to fly to Holyhead via Liverpool, a busier airport about two hour’s drive east of Holyhead, close to the English side of the border.
Flying to Holyhead via Liverpool Airport
Unless you’re flying from Cardiff or Norwich (in which case Anglesey should be your destination of choice) Liverpool John Lennon Airport is definitely the better option. You can book flights here from a wide selection of European holiday destinations from city breaks to beach destination. There are also flights from many locations on the British Isles. Liverpool receives flights from Belfast City, Cork, Derry, Knock, Dublin, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Newquay (summer season only).
Once Your Flight Lands
Holyhead is just a ten minutes away by car or bus from Anglesey Airport via the North Wales Expressway. Travelling by road is also the fastest way to get here from Liverpool. Once your flight arrives, it is less than two hours from Liverpool in a car via the A55 road. There are public transport routes available from Liverpool to Holyhead but they are not direct so this could double your travel time.
When to Fly to Holyhead
Towering mountains and craggy coastlines characterise this wonderful island town, and the hiking here is fantastic at any time of year. However, booking flights to coincide with the annual Holyhead Maritime Leisure and Heritage Festival in July is a great way to experience the local culture. Head out to a comedy night or see some live music, while absorbing the town’s maritime history through a series of locally organised community activities that are perfect for the whole family. The festival is a great event and the perfect time to book a flight to Holyhead.
