• A plane trip can be a great experience if you carry the right gear. Firstly, you'll want some toiletry items, such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a spare pair of socks and a few magazines. Next, leave space in your carry-on bag for your phone and charger, medications and maybe a quality neck pillow as well. Lastly, remember to bring your passport, travel documents and some cash.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of restricted items differs between airlines, the general rule to follow is avoid carrying anything sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like tools, metal cutlery, fuels and bleaching agents. Sports equipment like ski poles, and items that could injure passengers, such as guns and swords, won't be allowed on board either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your goal here is to feel as comfortable as possible. Opt for a pair of flat, closed-toe shoes, dress in loose, natural-fibre clothing and remember to bring a sweater in case it gets chilly in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by lengthy periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Walk around the cabin and give your legs a stretch or do some simple exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

The simple answer is — be prepared. We've pulled together some helpful hints for a speedy trip through security. Watch out Gothenburg, here you come:

• Keep your passport and travel documents at hand. They're the first items you'll be asked to present to airport security.
• Your belt, jacket, keys and other contents of your pockets, like your headphones, will need to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them before your turn arrives.
• Electronic devices like phones and laptops will also have to go through the machine to be scanned. Don't worry, you'll be back online in no time.
• Any liquids or gels, such as perfume or toothpaste, that you want to take on board must be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• The right choice of footwear can save you several minutes. Hiking or heavy-style boots are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Slip-on shoes usually aren't.
• Sharp items such as knives and scissors are prohibited in the cabin. They'll be seized at security, so pack them in your checked bags.
