The oldest island in the Canaries, and the second largest after Tenerife, Fuerteventura is also the closest to the coast of West Africa, and is a place notable for its fusion of Spanish and African influences. For most visitors who fly to Fuerteventura, though, the real appeal lies in its landscape of white beaches and dramatic peaks. The island was declared a biosphere reserve in 2009, which makes it a paradise for nature lovers, and its strong winds ensure it is perfect for water sports enthusiasts as well.

Flying to Fuerteventura Airport (FUE)

There is one international airport on Fuerteventura, located five miles south of the island’s capital, Puerto del Rosario. Fuerteventura Airport (FUE), also known as El Matorral Airport, operates flights to and from a number of destinations. Most flights operate year-round, however a small number are only seasonal. The airport boasts a number of duty-free shops, cafés and restaurants, and it is well equipped to accommodate disabled passengers.

Booking Your Flight to Fuerteventura

Most major airports in the UK and Western Europe are served by Fuerteventura Airport. That makes it very easy to book a direct flight to the island, no matter what the time of year. However, if you are travelling from a destination outside of Western Europe, you will require a connecting flight. The good news is that it’s very simple to arrange an affordable connecting flight when you book using the Expedia tool.

Because Fuerteventura Airport only receives short-haul flights, it can be tricky to book premium flights that also fly direct. Your most convenient option will be to travel in economy class. For travellers on a budget, low-cost carriers such as easyJet, Eurowings and Iberia Express can offer the cheapest flights.

Travelling Around Fuerteventura

One of the easiest ways to travel around Fuerteventura is by bus. There are a variety of different routes open to the public, two of which pass through the airport. You may find it easiest to go to Puerto del Rosario by bus and travel on from there. However, you also have the option of hiring your own vehicle from one of several car hire agencies at the airport. This is a good idea if you are planning on travelling around the island to tour the more remote areas. Just be aware that driving is easier on the eastern coast of the island, where the main motorways run.

If you want to take a day trip to the other Canary Islands, you should make your way to Corralejo, Morro Jable or Puerto del Rosario. From these destinations, you can take ferries to Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

Things to Do on Fuerteventura

There’s so much to do on Fuerteventura, you won’t know where to begin! Particular highlights include Corralejo Beach, famed for being very sandy and windy, the picturesque Bentacuria Church, and the deserted island of Isla de Lobos. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can climb Mount Tindaya and enjoy breathtaking views of both Fuerteventura and neighbouring Lanzarote. Lastly, make sure you have time to sample the fresh sea food, and perhaps even try your hand at some of those famous water sports!
