Flights: Dungannon
Dungannon is a city in the centre of County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, and its geographical location, together with the presence of Castle Hill, which offers views for miles around in all directions, have meant that it has always been a strategically important place. Its importance to modern visitors rests on the beauty of the surrounding countryside and the fact that flights to reach Dungannon can be taken to two airports – Belfast International Airport and George Best Belfast City Airport.
Choosing your flight to Dungannon
Belfast international airport is the larger of the two and is just 34 miles from Dungannon. It operates flights around the clock, every day of the week and handles about 11,000 passengers each day. There are 7 airlines running flights in and out of Belfast International airport throughout the year, rising to 11 during summer. Belfast International Airport offers a truly diverse service, handling flights from cities as varied as Amsterdam, Manchester, New York and London.
George Best Belfast City airport is slightly further away from Dungannon – at 36 miles – and smaller than its competitor. Its relative lack of size, however, doesn’t stop it providing a comprehensive selection of flights, with planes coming in from Liverpool, Birmingham, Newcastle and European cities such as Amsterdam and Barcelona. Six airlines offer flights in and out of the airport, and, in 2013, it handled more than 2.5 million passengers.
The facilities at both airports are what you would expect from up to date transport hubs, offering everything you need to step off your flight and immediately begin enjoying your visit to Dungannon. Once the flights have landed, passengers at either airport can change their money at a bureau de change, pick up a bite to eat and then collect the keys to a rental car. If your flight has left you feeling somewhat the worse for wear, then you can take advantage of the hotels which are literally next door to each airport, before travelling on to explore Northern Ireland.
Reaching Dungannon after your flight
Both airports have a taxi rank immediately outside the entrance and public transport into Belfast city centre, from where buses and coaches can be taken to Dungannon. If you want to take control as soon as you step off the flight, however, then a hire car will enable you to set off straight away onto the M1, past the southern shore of Lough Neagh and into the heart of Dungannon. From your flight to your hotel it will take just over an hour.
