If you're not prepared, travelling can be testing. But there's no need to hit the panic button just yet. Follow these handy hints for a trouble-free start to your getaway in David. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• The trick to having a worry-free travel experience is to pack in advance. Start with the essentials: passport, travel documents, bank cards and daily medications. Next, bring items that'll help keep you busy, like some electronic devices or a thrilling novel. You'll also want to pack your chargers, a neck pillow and a pair of earplugs. Last but not least, don't forget to squeeze in toiletry items like a toothbrush, cleansing wipes and a clean T-shirt.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of restricted items can differ between air carriers, the general guide to follow is avoid carrying anything flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes screwdrivers, blades, aerosol cans and flares. Sports equipment like hockey sticks, and items that could injure passengers, such as guns and swords, won't be allowed on board either.

What to wear on a flight:

• You'll want to go for comfort over style. Prepare for changes in temperature by layering up, and pick flat, enclosed footwear like slip-ons.
• Most travellers have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity. To lower your risk on board, stay hydrated, consider wearing compression socks and do gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat.

It's easy — be prepared. We've put together some handy tips and tricks for a stress-free trip through security. Look out David, here you come:

• Your travel documents and ID will need to be presented to security personnel. Have them easily accessible to avoid fumbling around for them.
• Next up is the X-ray machine. Remove anything on you that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes things like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• Your electronic gadgets like phones and laptops will also need to go on a tray to be scanned. Don't worry, you'll be back online before you know it.
• Any gels or liquids, such as shampoo or hand cream, that you want to take on board must be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• Slip-on shoes are a sensible footwear choice as you're less likely to be asked to remove them when passing through security. Boots and heavier-style shoes are usually subjected to additional screening.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, put them in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed on board.
