One of four residences in this 1870s-era historic renovated property, the 3,000-square-foot "Steeple Suite" residence spans the entire second floor and features a private elevator. Blending the best of old and new, this historic home has been completely refurbished with modern design and high-end appliances, fixtures and furnishings. Enjoy on-site exclusive parking, 3 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms (each stocked with plenty of fluffy towels, Gilchrist & Soames bath products, and a hair dryer), and a chef's kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances.   • The Dock Street Theatre is Charleston's last surviving hotel from the antebellum period. The silhouette of its wrought iron balcony against the spire of St. Philip's church may be the single most photographed spot in the city. The main portion of the building was constructed around 1809 as Planter's Hotel. The hotel was built by Alexander Calder and his wife, who did so by renovating several pre-existing buildings at the site. The main entrance may not have been built until 1855 by J.W. Gamble. The hotel was used extensively by planters from the midlands of South Carolina, who traveled to Charleston during horse-racing season. It was noted for its wonderful food and drinks during this era, and the South's famous Planter's Punch may have originated here. Guests to the hotel passed through the recessed porch with brownstone columns, into the lobby, and up a grand staircase that ascended to a drawing room. While much of the interior has been altered, these elements of the antebellum hotel remain and were adapted in subsequent uses of the building. A series of additions to the hotel throughout the 19th and 20th centuries can be easily identified by differences in brick coloration. This theater is said to have been the first building built specifically for theatrical performances in America. Planter's Hotel occasionally housed one of the city's theatrical troupes, which performed at the nearby New Theatre during the mid-19th century. The most notable actor of this troupe was Junius Brutus Booth. Booth was the patriarch of an outstanding family of actors, which included John Wilkes Booth, President Lincoln's assassin. Junius Booth, who stayed at the Planter's Hotel, allegedly tried to kill his manager here in 1838. Today the Dock Street Theatre is home to the Charleston Stage Company, South Carolina's largest professional theater production company, and houses the city's Cultural Affairs office as well as The City Gallery, an exhibition space for local artists.

Wonderful location!

I don’t usually take the time to write reviews, but this place was amazing! It was spacious enough for 3 couples. The bedrooms, living space, and kitchen were huge. You cannot beat the location, being able to walk to the downtown area in minutes. We will definitely stay here again!

CofC move in day!

We stayed at this property to move our daughter into CofC. The college was within walking distance and the space we had in the property made it so easy to organize and be comfortable during our stay. We are excited to book this property again for our future stays in Charleston.

Girls getaway

5 lifelong friends met in Charleston and stayed at this amazing property. Property was very spacious and clean. Location is excellent. So many things to discover within walking distance. Accommodations had everything we needed for the trip. Andrea our host was extremely responsive and replied immediately to any questions. Beautiful Property, Great Location

The place was so nice, with lots of space, beautiful kitchen, and separate living spaces so everyone could enjoy our time in the home during down time. It is literally steps to the market and the carriage tour company, which made our short trip still easy to access and enjoy all the city had to offer. Would love to stay even longer next time to take advantage of the updated kitchen, big tub in the master bath, and washer/dryer as amenities!

3 fun Days in Charleston

This was a fabulous property. 3 couples--childhood friends who hadn't seen each other for over 25 years! The unit is everything they say. Totally updated, beautiful bedrooms - two with their own bathrooms, 1 uses the had bathroom. Updated appliances, nice seating area for great conversations. AND oh, by the way, perfect location for getting right into the action in Charleston. So we would say - you can't go wrong picking this unit for your next trip.

Charleston Dream

Location Location Location. On East Bay very close to restaurants, shopping the city market and King Street. The Battery is only blocks away. The house is beautifully decorated, comfortable and well appointed. This is a fantastic property. We will rent again. Thank you so much!

We had a wonderful time during our visit to Charleston and very much enjoyed staying in this condo. This is an exceptional condo located in a prime area—just steps away from many attractions, a full grocery store, and restaurants. The unit had three large bedrooms and three bathrooms, along with an open-concept kitchen and living space. The kitchen came fully equipped with top of the line appliances. Andrea, the property manager, was highly responsive and very accommodating, she was a pleasure to communicate with. We would most definitely return to the "Steeple Suite"

Great location with lots of space

It was my first time doing a VRBO so wasn’t sure what to expect but the house was perfectly located as everyone has said. It was clean, well maintained, and in good order. The long list of things we were required to do with penalties for noncompliance was a little daunting, but maybe that is standard in this kind of home. I would definitely recommend it.

Best Place Downtown

Bright, clean, HUGE. The location is perfect - we didn't even rent a car. And a private elevator, adding that extra posh touch. It's a little more than some nearby properties, but don't you need to pamper yourself?

Loved Charleston!

We really enjoyed our stay at Ansonborough. The location was great, the unit was very clean, well equipped and roomy for the three couples over a long weekend. Andrea was very responsive and very quick to respond to issue with the air conditioning. I would recommend Ansonborough as a great choice in Charleston. JC

Wedding weekend

It was better than advertised. The place was so beautifully decorated, the pictures don’t do this home justice as to just how big it is once you walk in. The elevator is a back saver since the unit is on the second floor. My daughters wedding was at Emeline’s, so it was less than a 3 minute walk to the venue. This home was exactly what we were hoping it would be. Andrea was wonderful to deal with, check in was a breeze. The only issue was parking, it comes with just one spot, so it was difficult getting our friends parked during the busy weekend. We travel quite a bit, and always use Vrbo. This was hands down the nicest home we’ve ever rented.
