Grand architecture and a rich repository of Romanian and foreign literature make this library an outstanding place to spend some time.

The Central University Library of Bucharest is one of the most important university libraries in Romania. The august institution was inaugurated in 1895 and serves university students as well as members of the public. It holds a vast collection of books, documents, manuscripts and letters by well-known Romanian figures. Stop at the library’s main building on Victory Avenue to appreciate its architectural beauty, browse archive material or enjoy a concert.

French architect Paul Gottereau designed the original library building. However, much of it was destroyed by fire during the anticommunist revolution that swept through the country and other parts of eastern and central Europe in 1989. The building you see today is the result of extensive renovation and construction work. While outside the library, look up at the commanding equestrian statue of Carol I, the first king of modern Romania.

Inside are 12 reading rooms, covering such collections as biology, physics, mathematics, linguistics, journalism and education sciences. If you want to access any of the written material, you will need to obtain a permit. This requires a small fee and photographic identification, such as a passport. You also need to bring a photo that can be used for the permit if you want access for an extended period. Once you have it, go on one of the library orientation tours to familiarize yourself with its services. These are conducted every hour.

Take advantage of the library’s cultural programme by attending a concert. To see if there will be any performances during your visit to the city, go to the library’s official website.

The library is open from Monday to Friday and is located in the centre of the city. Come by public transportation or drive and use the parking lots, for a fee, along nearby streets.

After your visit to the Central University Library, walk across the street to explore the National Museum of Art of Romania. It is housed in a former royal palace and features medieval and modern Romanian art and European art among its collections.
