Relax on the secluded bays, visit the sleepy fishing villages and trek through a cloud forest in this diverse state. Pristine stretches of golden sand decorate the Atlantic Coast in the idyllic state of Ceara. Inland, scenic trails meander through the mountainous terrain, where you will find a cloud forest and a pilgrimage site. Try some of the exhilarating activities on the ocean, such as paragliding, surfing and kitesurfing.
Enjoy the fun and dynamic ambiance in the state’s capital city of Fortaleza. Appreciate the year-round hot and sunny weather, as you work on your tan and swim in the Atlantic Ocean by Praía do Futuro. June to December is the driest period.
Visit the bars and restaurants on the lively beaches of Praía do Meireles and Praía de Iracema. Among the scenic highlights is the wetlands area of the Parque Ecológico do Cocó in the southeastern outskirts.
Continue northwest or southeast along the coast for countless sand dunes and dramatic rock formations. Bring your kids to the colourful waterslides and pools of Beach Park in Aquiraz, located about 45 minutes’ drive south of Fortaleza. Further south, find more thrilling activities, such as paragliding and kitesurfing, at the beaches of the former hippy retreat of Canoa Quebrada.
Make your way northwest along the Atlantic Coast to encounter unspoiled, secluded beaches in Trairi, Mundaú and Cumbuco. Stroll along the quaint lanes of Guajiru and snorkel to see the colourful fish by the reef in Flexeiras. The Parque Nacional de Jericoacoara has untouched sand dunes and crystal-clear water. Relax on the tranquil beach of Jijoca de Jericoacoara.
Wander through a cloud forest in the Serra da Ibiapaba and ride a cable car through the immense Parque Nacional de Ubajara. Follow pilgrims to the Juazeiro do Norte town, the home of a 19th-century priest and politician that developed a following.
Fly to the Fortaleza International Airport to get to Ceara, which is in the northeastern corner of the country. Get around the area via inter-city buses or consider renting a car. Nearby states on the Atlantic Ocean include Alagoas and Piauí.
