Among the lesser-known parts of Brazil, Rio Grande do Norte is a tranquil destination with stunning beaches, natural pools and farms. It is a cattle-ranching area with friendly people and plenty of activities. Make your way through the many farms and sugar plantations for a sense of the state’s history.
Plan a trip to the state capital, Natal, for its stunning stretches of sand, including the urban Genipabu Beach. Among the most intriguing sights is the Forte dos Reis Magos, a 16th-century castle offering marvellous views of the town.
Embark on one of the city’s famous buggy tours across the dunes of the Parque das Dunas. The park occupies a large portion of the city’s southeastern outskirts and is an ideal place to go sandboarding and zip lining. Spot exotic wildlife here and cool off in the natural pool.
Stroll or cycle along the 6.2-mile (10-kilometre) Via Costeira boulevard and chat to joggers. Enjoy the picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean as you get to Ponta Negra and relax on Ponta Negra Beach.
Travel south down the coast to the party town of Pipa, which is full of restaurants and bars that come alive at night. In the day, spot dolphins off-shore and join the surfers on the choppy waves. Continue south to Baía Formosa and see the world’s largest cashew tree, which occupies an entire park by Pirangi Beach.
For a change of scenery, head inland for the enchanting Castelo Zé dos Montes, a castle overlooking the mountains. Another highlight is the Statue of Santa Rita of Cascia. Arrive in Mossoró, renowned as the first Brazilian city where slavery was abolished and women given the vote.
The state of Rio Grande do Norte is located just south of Ceará and north of Paraíba in the north-easternmost corner of Brazil. Fly to the Greater Natal International Airport and get around the state with buses and cars. Tour operators offer transportation links around the region.
