Castletroy Golf Club is in the suburb of Castletroy, in the south-west of Limerick and a short drive from a choice of hotels and budget accommodation around the university campus villages. It is two and a half miles or a 10-minute drive along Dublin Road to the city centre and half an hour’s drive to Shannon Airport along the N18. Castletroy is also well connected via bus routes into the city.

History of Castletroy Golf Club

Castletroy Golf Club was founded in 1937 and is one of Ireland’s top 100 golf courses, a tree-lined course in a parkland setting that was redesigned and modernised in 2006 by golf architect Eddie Connaughton. It now has an 18 tee box and green sites built to high specifications as well as water features and fairway bunkering. Certain parts of the site are played over water and there are panoramic views from the 14th and 17th holes. It also has a clubhouse on site, which is open to non-members and serves Sunday lunches, and is open all year round for individual lessons as well as tailored packages to suit players of all levels.

Around half of its residents are students given its proximity to the University of Limerick and various student villages as well as commercial campuses and educational centres. It is also home to the National Technology Park, a leading centre for IT development and home to major international businesses.

Castletroy is also well known for sporting activities given the university grounds and school sporting fields, Gaelic Athletics Association and its well-known golf course, which divides Monaleen and Castletroy. Other historic sites of interest include a small Jewish graveyard that dates back to the 19th Century when there was a sizeable Jewish population in Limerick.
