A coastal town with a prominent church tower, a river, and a beach.

Between the blue of the sea and the green of the hills lies Castiglione. This picturesque little town is a renowned, well-equipped seaside destination, famous on the tourism scene in Italy for its beautiful beaches and the rich pine groves that go all the way to Marina di Grosseto with the magnificent Tombolo Pine Grove.

On a holiday in Castiglione della Pescaia you will get to explore the old medieval hamlet enclosed by a formidable wall with towers, gates and the castle perched on a spur of Mount Petriccio. The surrounding area offers extremely varied landscape, from the golden beaches of the famous Punta Ala to the Daccia Botrona, and from the Tombolo Pine Grove to the hills covered with forests under the shadow of an old medieval village, with the fortified walls of the castle overlooking the sea. Its evocative atmosphere and its unspoilt nature together with the splendid sea make it one of the most popular places on the Tyrrhenian Sea a holiday in Castiglione della Pescaia is a great opportunity to spend a few days of complete relaxation.

Castiglione is an old fishing town, as we can see from its name, "Pescaia," and in the picturesque canal harbour pleasure boats of all kinds moor, including the traditional fishing boats. The town is entirely surrounded by verdant pine groves, ideal for taking a turn on foot, by horse or on a bike down the trails that go into the underbrush, with moss and pine needles all around. The uncontaminated sea is close by and the incredibly long beaches with fine, light-coloured sand go all the way up to the edges of the pine grove. In this setting, everyone can find what they're looking for to play outdoor sports: from jogging to mountain biking, from beach volleyball to water sports, even romantic boat rides.

The area around Castiglione della Pescaia is also worth a visit, full of fascinating places like Vetulonia, one of the most important Etruscan cities where you can see a necropolis and the archaeological museum, or Tirli, a much talked-about village that tells the story of the way life used to be in Maremma, famous for its rustic, genuine cuisine. The ancient Buriano is next, with its medieval castle and the breathtaking view over Maremma. Last of all, about 15 km from Castiglione della Pescaia, you'll find Punta Ala a tourist town with high quality hotels and beach facilities, among the most complete and avant-garde on the Mediterranean. If you have enough time, you just can't miss the splendid nature reserves like the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago, the Maremma Park and the European Turtle and Stork Protection Centre.

Castiglione is a town that has much to offer: the little harbour with a canal, the surrounding marsh, the hilltop location of the historic centre, the beach and the medieval castle. You reach the historic centre through the Porta Urbica, rebuilt around 1600 on a door-tower from there it's great fun to get lost in the cobblestone streets, discovering old bars, taverns and businesses that tell Castiglione's story, its history and traditions. Currently privately owned, the castle stands at the top of the hill, from where you can enjoy gorgeous sunsets. There are many buildings and monuments in this Tuscan city, symbols and signs of the past and of this territory's history. Some of the main ones are certainly Casa Rossa Ximenes, dating back to the Renaissance, Palazzo del Pretorio, Chiesa di Santa Maria del Giglio and the church of San Giovanni Battista. Lastly, via Giatti is a panoramic road that goes up to the sea and from where you can see the entire coast up to Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare.
