County Carlow Holiday Guide

Home to the stirring Blackstairs Mountains and the rushing River Barrow, County Carlow is a landlocked but picturesque county in the south-east of Ireland. With a little over 50,000 inhabitants, County Carlow is one of the least populous Irish counties, but this makes it the ideal getaway for anyone seeking a really rural retreat.

Named after the county town of Carlow, you’ll find a range of great activities going on in this beautiful region. Spend a day in bustling Carlow Town, stop by one of the county’s many beautiful country gardens, play a round of golf, or, if you like a tipple, take a tour of the Carlow Brewing Company in Bagenalstown.

Visit Carlow Town

While County Carlow it is one of the smallest counties in the country, Carlow Town is one of the largest urban regions in Ireland. This bustling town was once even the medieval capital of Ireland. Discover Carlow’s unique heritage with a wander through its lively historic streets, where you could head out shopping, relax in a restaurant or kick back in a pub beside the chuckling waters of the River Barrow.

Country Gardens in County Carlow

Thanks to its array of woodland, rare exotic plants and historic estate land, Altamont Gardens in Tullow is known as “the jewel in Ireland’s gardening crown”. If you’re in Carlow Town, you could also head to the Delta Sensory Gardens. As the name suggests, this peaceful haven combines water features, roses, sculptures and even music, to delight every sense.

Carlow Brewing Company in Bagenalstown

If you’re a fan of craft beer, don’t miss a trip to the Carlow Brewing Company. This independent brewery produces several popular Irish beverages and craft beers. Surround yourself with the scent of fresh hops with a tour here, where you will learn from the experts exactly how your favourite stouts are made. You’ll even get to sample some beer fresh from the barrel.

Nature in County Carlow

At over 2,500 feet high, the impressive Mount Leinster is the highest of the Blackstairs Mountains. Head out hiking, cycling, or even have a go at hang gliding. Situated just a few miles east of the town of Borris, there’s no better place to enjoy views across the fecund Barrow Valley and the lush green patchwork of the County Carlow countryside.

Farmers’ Markets in County Carlow

As well as being on Mount Leinster’s doorstep, Borris also hosts a regular craft farmers’ market. Packed with mouth-watering local produce, stop off for some home-cooked food, Irish cheeses, fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, as well as a range of arts of crafts. In summer, the nearby town of Tullow also hosts an annual agricultural festival. This is one of the largest in Ireland and makes a great day out whether you’re a fan of farming or not.
