Pocket Guide: Brunei

The sultanate of Brunei Darussalam is wedged between the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. It boasts majestic mosques, virgin rainforest, towns built on stilts and a food scene to rival those of its far better known Southeast Asian neighbours. Book a hotel in Brunei, an atmospheric place to visit for its capital city, its wildlife and its coral reefs offering astounding, and largely undiscovered, diving.

Areas & Neighbourhoods: Where to Stay in Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan - Why not book a hotel in the centre of this remarkably ordered capital; this area clings to the gold-domed Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. Explore a little further and you will come to the city's famous water village, Kampong Ayer, or reach the stately landscaped park, Taman Persiaran Damuan. Great eating can be had all over the city but for upmarket treats head to the Gadong area, just north of the centre. At the other end of the scale nothing could work the appetite better than the smell of the open air food stalls at the Tami Kianggeh market.

Temburong - Isolated from the rest of Brunei by the imposition of Sarawak is the largest preserved tract of primary rainforest in Borneo. The stunning Ulu Temburong National Park is accessible only by longboat and lets you walk 60 metres above the jungle floor through its tree tops. Look out for gibbons and orange-beaked rhinoceros hornbills.

West Brunei - Beach lovers should head to Pantai Seri Kenangan (the ‘unforgettable beach’ in Tutong) and book some seaside accommodation whilst hikers should make tracks for the walking trails in the Sungai Liang Forest Reserve.

South and Central Brunei - The interior contains the ancient longhouses of Labi and a number of refreshing waterfalls.

Things to See with a Hotel in Brunei

The dazzling main mosque in the capital sparkles by day and is illuminated by night. Its splendour contrasts with the simple tribal longhouses of the interior. Across the city from the mosque the ramshackle stilted town of Kampong Ayer and the stately grandeur of the formal park also provide contrasting sights.

Things to Do with a Brunei Hotel

Visit the Iban settlements and their traditional longhouses on a tour which could include stopping at the spectacular waterfalls nearby as well. Head off into the pristine rainforest to spot gibbons swinging through the trees and to walk through the canopy. Head underwater to the unspoilt coral reefs or stay in the jungle for kayaking, tubing, night jungle treks and medicinal plant walks. You should by now have worked up an appetite so head back to the capital and enjoy fine foods from all over Asia.
