We were in the area for medical reasons. The cabin has beautiful views, lake, trees, wildlife. Inside was equally as beautiful and has everything you could need. Wed stay again!!

Beautiful space - just what we needed to rest and relax. So pretty and quiet - a peaceful place. Had everything we needed! Owner super responsive and had all the info we needed right at hand.
We had the pleasure of staying at The Gem while visiting family in Bovey. It was such a beautiful location (that is saying something considering we are from Alaska) with everything you could need. We had a wonderful time fishing on the lake and were quite successful. The sunroom was a fantastic surprise on arrival. We look forward to staying again while visiting family in the near future.
Enjoyed our stay at this lake home. Very convenient to Grand Rapids and Hibbing with easy access to golf and trails. Bed was comfy. Host was responsive when needed. Loved having the bald eagle pair hanging around along with a juvenile. Were surprised one day by an actual flock of downy woodpeckers flitting through the trees around the cabin!
I would recommend to bring your own bath towels. The bath towels there were pretty old and not very nice. The location is quiet and peaceful. The cabin served its purpose for a weekend.
We stayed Sunday thru Thursday. The weather was beautiful. Actually had a glass looking lake one morning when we went kayaking. The loons sang their songs and actually had eagles flying back and forth from our shore to another across the lake. We had everything we needed and will be returning. Lovely at the end of the Cul de sac, neighbors and the lake were very quiet. Just what we needed. The addition of the 3 season porch was a welcome and wonderful surprise. My husband had just gotten out of the hospital and it was perfect for him to sit and enjoy Thank you very much for a lovely experience
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The linens (both bedding and the bath/kitchen towels) could use refreshing and/or replacing. But overall the place is great!

Beautiful property with up north feel on a great (super clear) lake. Very Nice!!!
This was our first visit to this property and we loved it! I especially loved it being tucked back on a cul-de-sac. We had essentially no traffic and only had neighbors a couple of the days we were there. The property was very well maintained. Our family spent most of our time, when not on the lake, in the 3 season room. I loved the floor to ceiling windows. We spent many hours playing cards in this space. The fishing was great once we figured out the lake! We caught some really nice walleye, smallmouth, and large mouth bass as well a some northerns. My only complaint, although more a suggestion is regarding the shower. The shower is pretty small and it would have been nice to have been able to adjust the direction of the shower head. All in all, we loved this vacation and hope to return!
We enjoyed our stay at this cabin. We stayed with our young adult children and brought the boat.
Positive/Pros:
Located on a quiet dead-end road
3 season porch was fantastic
Lake is nice/clean water/large in size
Public boat landing is close and easy to find
Size of cabin/layout was perfect for the 4 of us
Dock for boats
Plenty of wood for bon fire and wood stove--which we needed one night as it was quite cool
Plenty of parking-we were able to park our boat and truck near the cabin
Not far from Grand Rapids if you need anything
Internet was a nice surprise so my daughter could work on her class while we were there
It's quite an elevation change from the cabin to the dock with quite a few stairs so anyone not in good shape may have issues navigating the incline, though there is a bench about half way to rest on.
The Northern Gem was everything we needed and more for our vacation! The cabin and property were spacious and clean. They have chairs and a picnic table for sitting on the patio and have a new porch that was a great place to eat and play games, etc. The owner was very informative and easy to work with!
The kitchen is stocked with everything we needed! The only thing that could be improved are the mattresses in the loft!
Going down to the dock has a lot of stairs but was great exercise! There is a nice dock by the water. We rented a pontoon from R&R in Grand Rapids. They deliver and pick up!! The cabin is in a great location, very close to Grand Rapids. Our favorite places to eat were Sammies Pizza, Mad Dogs and Rapids Brewery! It is very close to Eagle Ridge golf course, which also has a nice restaurant/ bar/ golf course! Thanks for helping us to have a great vacation!

We loved it
Our stay at Northern Jem was excellent! The cabin was more than sufficient and we had plenty of room. All of our five children had thier own bed. We very much enjoyed the three seasons room where we ate most of our meals. The property is beautiful and full of birds and squirrels. We saw deer multiple times on the road to and from the cabin.
We enjoyed fishing from the private dock (lots of perch there that you can hardly keep off your hook) and fishing from a boat where we caught lots of bass and a few bluegill. Our youngest caught a 17" small mouth bass which he will remember forever. Some reviews mention the steps from the cabin to to dock, so we knew what to expect there. It was a bit of a work out each time, but it's good leg strengthening activity!
Communication with the owner was excellent. I had one question during our stay and he responded promptly.

Just okay
Cabin was clean but had some functional issues. The kitchen sink had a leak that caused water damage creating a strong moldy/musty smell. The overall water pressure in the cabin was not good. The toilet tank stopped filling and we were not able to flush the toilet without pouring water in it. All of these things we were able to manage with but for the overall cost of this rental I was disappointed. The kids had a great time enjoying the loft feature, all appliances worked great and were nice and clean.

Big Fun at the Lake
Rica, Margot, and I went here for a few days in May. Margot enjoyed running around on the grass and at the water's edge. After an hour of playing at the lake, we would go back to the cabin and take naps by the fire. We did this many times. It was big time fun and very relaxing. More highlights are detailed below.
Margot and I went out on the canoe once. It was fun, but challenging to control with one person. (Margot is a dog.) Later I dropped my water bottle in the lake so I went out on a kayak to retrieve it. This was easier to control, so I tried to fish from the kayak. I got seasick from the light choppiness on the lake, so I went back to the shore. (Rica told me to mention that I get seasick VERY EASILY, and this is not a problem with the lake.)
We got food at Ogle's after I failed to catch a fish. It was good. We watched TV in the evenings. Highlights included "Ask This Old House" and "Rick Steves' Europe" on PBS.
On the last morning, I got out to the dock before 6AM in order to fish. A beaver swam past the dock and gave me a look that said "What? I'm a beaver. Get out of my face." I still caught nothing. (I should also mention that I have never caught a fish without my dad present.)
I left my magnetic Star Wars light-sabre-shaped bottle opener on the refrigerator door. We may need another trip to the Northern Jem to retrieve it.

Nice Cabin. Lots of stairs to the lake
My husband and I were at Trout lake for a fishing event, and we came early to scout out the lake. We overall had a good stay the Northern Jem. The cabin is very clean, well decorated, and has everything you might need in the kitchen. The owners were responsive with any questions that came up. The area around the cabin was quite beautiful and there were deer that walked through the paths every morning. There was enough parking for our boat trailer and probably 2 other vehicles. We brought our 19 ft Lund fishing boat and the dock was good. There are big walleye, small mouth, and northern in this lake. I also caught a lot of rock bass off of the dock.
Overall, this was a nice cabin on a decent fishing lake.
Some "words of advice" for summer travelers to this cabin (the following is no fault of the cabin, but I mention because it may provide some guidance with choosing this cabin for your vacation)
- We came during a very HOT week with temps in the 90s every day and high humidity (dew points in the upper 60s). The temps usually get down to 50s at night in northern MN, but when we were there they got down to 75ish. We had the windows open with all fans on ect and the coolest it got in the cabin was around 80 degrees most nights. There was one night were we there was a breeze which was SUPER helpful. For perspective, our towels would not dry inside or outside on the line over the night from the heat and humidity. The hot sun was able to dry them during the day though. We are fairly tolerant people, but we were pretty miserable as there was no real “escape” from the heat except to go places in the car for some air-conditioning. So, if you are planning a mid-summer vacation, keep this in mind.
-There are over 60+ stairs between the dock and the cabin. Some of the stairs are on a hill/incline so it is more than just stairs. I read on another review that there were stairs, but I didn't anticipate quite this many. We are young and healthy so didn't have any issues with them, but for someone that was older or has joint issues, getting up and down could definitely be an issue. My 70 yo father would not be able to make it up and down the stairs.
All of that being said, I would consider coming back in the fall or spring when the weather was cooler.
Everything you could need is supplied. The new addition of the 3 season porch is wonderful. We didn’t realize it was so high up from the lake. Enjoyed watching the eagles. Thank you!

Adorable cabin on the lake!
The cabin with all its lovely colors and rustic charm was the perfect getaway. We loved the loft with multiple beds. The new enclosed porch was a great addition where we played games, had meals and hung out. Cabin had all the items we needed for meals, plenty of towels, and games. A cozy spot for family to reconnect, make memories and enjoy each other in a beautiful space. It rained while we were there, so there was some lake time but not as much as we would have liked. We used the canoe which was nice to have available. The grounds surrounding the cabin with the tree canopy was lovely and wonderful. We would definitely book in the future for family vacations. Thank you.
We enjoyed a wonderful week at The Northern Jem. Trout Lake is a gift of nature and this very private waterfront cottage provided an exceptional shoreline to enjoy this lakeside experience.
This was my second time renting here, still as wonderful as I remember from 2 years ago. They also made some updates to the place that are beautiful! Great place to relax with the family.

Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your cabin with us! We had a lovely relaxing weekend. The space has all the basic things you will need. It's cozy and the star of the show is the view of the lake. The space is getting some finishing touches with the addition of the new sun room, but is still totally wonderful. Classic Minnesota cabin :)
We had a great girls weekend. We loved the loft with all the beds. It was great to all sleep in the same spot! The wood stove was great for those chilly fall nights. The cabin had everything we needed! We will definitely be back!! Probably a girls summer weekend so we can enjoy the beautiful lake!!

A True Northern Gem
We had a great time at Northern Jem. It was exactly what we were hoping for: a log cabin nestled in beautiful fall colored trees, catching fish kayaking on a clear blue lake, cool fall weather and warming ourselves by the wood burning stove. We even got a glimpse of the bald eagle fishing from the lake. A perfect get away. Thank you for sharing your cabin with us.
