About this property

Bodega Bay waterfront studio cottage on stilts — 1 bed, gas fireplace

  • Summary:

Wake to the cries of seabirds and watch fishing boats motor past from your waterfront perch. This intimate studio sleeps 2 and sits directly over Bodega Bay on weathered pilings — the water literally flows beneath you. Sip morning coffee on the narrow deck as harbor seals surface nearby. Just steps from Diekmann's Bay Store and The Boat House restaurant. An hour and a half from San Francisco, you'll find the coastal reset you've been craving.

    The Space:

The water moves beneath the floorboards of this studio cottage, built on weathered pilings directly over Bodega Bay — harbor seals surface off the deck rail and the fishing fleet idles past the windows. A four-poster queen and a gas fireplace make it a front-row perch for 2.

The single room layers living, sleeping, and dining around the bay outside the windows. A leather sofa and armchair circle the gas fireplace; a four-poster queen bed anchors the far end, framed so the harbor is the first thing you see at sunrise. The kitchenette is set up for the morning kettle and reheats — there's no stovetop, so plan to walk to The Boat House or Spud Point for the rest. A drop-leaf table by the window seats two as boats motor past.

    OUTDOOR LIVING

A narrow wooden walkway runs along the water side of the cottage, offering direct access to bay views. The weathered wood deck with railings becomes your perch for morning coffee or evening wine as the sunset paints the water in golds and pinks.

    THE HARBOR ON FOOT

Diekmann's Bay Store covers provisions 0.1 miles up the road, The Boat House plates fish and chips at 0.2, and Gourmet Au Bay pours wine flights the same distance. Spud Point's chowder line forms 0.6 miles along the water, Terrapin Creek handles the anniversary dinner at 0.5, and Doran Regional Park's family beach curves out 1.3 miles south. Worth knowing before you book: 55 steps descend from the road to the front door.

    SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS

The main room features a wooden four-poster queen bed with navy blue bedding, positioned to capture bay views right from your pillow. A snug, watertop nest for 2.

    PROPERTY AMENITIES

    -- Studio layout, 1 bathroom

    -- Gas fireplace

    -- Flat-screen cable TV

-- WiFi (note: can be intermittent)

-- Kitchenette with microwave, coffee maker, and dishwasher (no stovetop)

    -- Deck with bay views

    Guest Access:

Step into a cottage built right over the water on pilings — porthole-mirror baths, panoramic harbor views, and a deck that opens straight onto the bay for outdoor dining. The whole cottage is yours, with a gas fireplace and a BBQ set up for sunset. Grab the key from the lockbox; one parallel space sits along Highway 1 (please ease in carefully).

    The Neighborhood:

Perched directly over Bodega Bay in the heart of this working fishing village, you're perfectly positioned to experience authentic coastal California. Stroll 0.1 miles to Diekmann's Bay Store for morning provisions or grab fresh crab sandwiches at the legendary Spud Point Crab Company (0.6 miles). The Boat House restaurant sits just 0.2 miles away for waterfront dining, while Gourmet Au Bay (0.2 miles) offers wine flights and wood-fired flatbreads. For a special dinner, book a table at acclaimed Terrapin Creek (0.5 miles). Nature lovers will appreciate Coastal Prairie Trail Access (0.6 miles) for bluff-top walks and Doran Regional Park (1.3 miles) for the area's most family-friendly beach. The famous Bodega Head whale-watching spot is 3 miles south. This is Hitchcock country — the town of Bodega with its Birds filming locations lies 5 miles inland.

    Getting Around:

Bodega Bay is about 90 minutes from San Francisco — a beautiful drive up 101 and out Highway 1 through farmland and coastal ranches. A car makes exploring the Sonoma Coast effortless — it unfolds for miles in either direction. Cell service is light along the coast, so downloading offline maps before you arrive is a good idea.

    Other Things to Note:

The cottage's unique position over the water means you'll hear the rhythmic sounds of the bay throughout your stay — from gentle lapping waves to the occasional sea lion bark. Internet service can be intermittent in this coastal area, so we recommend not bringing time-sensitive work. The 55-step descent to the cottage entrance requires moderate mobility. While there's no air conditioning, the cottage stays naturally cool thanks to coastal breezes and fog. The kitchenette lacks a stovetop, but the microwave and local restaurants provide plenty of dining options. Cell service can be limited — embrace the chance to unplug. The cottage sits on pilings over the water, so you may notice slight movement during storms. The primary renter must be 21 or older. No beach access is available directly from the property, but beautiful state beaches are just a few miles north or south on Highway 1.

Perfect Anniversary Getaway

This was such a nice place to stay for the weekend. With a porch extending over the water and the beauty of the Northern California coast all around you, it was an incredible place for our getaway.

Beautiful View!

This “Bayside Cottage” in Bodega Bay was just wonderful! Amazing view as we sat on the deck and watched the sunset both nights. Very cozy living space and kitchen nook and the bathroom was nicer than ours at home. Highly recommend!

Wonderful commune with nature! Needs some maintenance on the railing and backdoor handle ((Allen wrench tightening) and water heater is too small for two people to each have a hot shower ( look into tankless heater which would fit in space).

Absolutely Delightful!

My husband and I had a relaxing and restful stay in this charming cottage. It was well equipped with everything we needed, and the breathtaking views made it even more special. The bed was comfortable, and the linens were good quality. While the steps were a bit of a challenge for our aging joints, the comfort and scenery made them absolutely worthwhile. The property managers were attentive and helpful, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience. We would love to return

Perfect little getaway space right on the water!

The place was perfect for the 2 of us to stay during a wedding weekend. Close to all we needed. Tbe amenities are basic but just what is needed. Great views, comfy bed, nice shower. Locks are a bit tricky and wish there was enough deck space for a chair, but open up the doors and windows and you get a fabulous breeze and sounds of the bay.

Bayside Cottage, Bodega Bay, CA

Great for a couple or a single. Nicely furnished. Great view of Bodea Harbor, lots of big windows. Nice shower. Roomy. Located right at the water's edge. John, the Vacasa person who came to get the heater working and plunge the backed up toilet. Was efficient and delightful.

Recharging station!

This small space was a perfect place for me to get a break from all the chaos of life. I was looking for quiet and secluded with a beautiful view which included a body of water. I saw no one while there (except the manager who came to fix the gas fireplace. He came quickly, fixed the issue and left. And was very nice too.) Easy to park and easy to get out----back on the road. I had no problem with the internet while there.

Cozy and Comfortable Retreat with 50 Stairs!

Lovely location, excellent, well appointed accommodation. The number and steepness of the 50 stairs should have been more prominently emphasized. As fairly fit folks in our late 70’s, negotiating the stairs while encumbered with our luggage was more difficult than we anticipated. The lack of filters for the coffee machine was inconvenient. Even though a drip coffeemaker was in the description, we assumed filters would have been included. The bed and bedding was comfortable, the WiFi was easy to access and the speed was excellent, considering the location. We were a bit concerned over the size of the water heater, but by spacing out our showers, the hot water was sufficient. We were a bit bemused by the sign suggesting we run the dishwasher before leaving since we were the dishwashers, ditto the request to place the used sheets and towels in the washing machine which was also nonexistent! Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and the location on the bay afforded relaxing views and splendid sunsets. We even savored the foggy morning on the water! A great place to relax, recharge, and refresh!

Studio on the harbor - quiet and relaxing

Spent 4 days in this little spot right over the water - was a decompression trip from a busy season at work. First - this place isn't fancy - the furniture is old & worn, but not in a bad way - in a comfy grandma's place kind of way. But extremely comfortable and the location is perfect if you are looking for a quiet, private space. Overlooking the harbor, watching the birds, seals and fishing boats was very relaxing. There are a lot of steps down to the cottage, but easy to navigate and the reason you get the views and privacy. There is a new microwave & drip coffeemaker, no stove, but there is a propane grill on the back porch. Again, nothing fancy but it adds to the comfort of the place and it is clean - everything you need. Wifi is spotty - slow if you can grab it. Cable is limited. Unplug and look out the windows! There are two local stores that have EVERYTHING you would need - one is within walking distance, the other either a bit further to walk, or short drive. Not many restaurants or shopping - but a few if you look around. The parking spot is right along the highway, but if you approach from the north, easy to get in and out with a medium sized car. The little electric fireplace gave a nice glow and plenty of heat - and the shower is great! Although you can't use the "beach" below the house - no big loss - it is very small and the tide covers it part of the day - and the balcony puts you right over the water anyway - with a direct view to the west, for nice sunsets. There are plenty of free beaches/ocean access a short and pretty drive to the north. Also a short drive to Bodega Head for dramatic ocean/cliff views. I loved this little spot and am very likely to return.
