The German Democratic Republic commissioned the tower in the late 1950s for TV and radio transmission. The design was modeled on the TV tower in Stuttgart and the Soviet satellite Sputnik.

Head up one story from the viewing platform to the Fernsehturm revolving Sphere Restaurant, where you can enjoy a meal and a German pilsner as you look out over Berlin. The sphere rotates once every half hour. Visit the gift store located in the base building to pick up souvenir items such as T-shirts and posters.
