Pocket Guide: Belize

They say good things come in small packages and Belize is no exception. This culturally rich country is loved for both its Central American jungles and Caribbean Sea, making it perfect for those with a spirit of adventure. Whether it’s descending into deep, natural caves, exploring archaeological sites or immersing yourself in a local village there is something for everyone to make Belize the ideal, tropical place to book your hotel.

Areas & Neighbourhoods: Where to Stay in Belize

The Cayo District — Once home to one of the world’s most mysterious civilisations, the ancient Maya, this area is dotted with archaeological sites. Discover tall stone temples often with stunning 360-degree views of the jungle. It is also a great place to learn how to make chocolate with the locals.

Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker —Although slightly more expensive than other areas of Belize, the scenery here alone makes it worthwhile. If powder white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters are your idea of heaven, this is definitely the area to book a hotel. Enjoy a cocktail at one of the plentiful and lively beach bars or spend some time snorkelling: you can’t go wrong!

Placencia — An endearing seaside town at the tip of a peninsula, three hours south of Belize city, Placencia is fast becoming one of the country’s most desirable hotel locations thanks to the gorgeous Caribbean sea and dazzling freshwater lagoon overflowing with wildlife.

Fort George – Easily the most upmarket and picturesque part of Belize city with stately houses and mansions, it is also where you will find the area’s best hotels. It also includes a lovely seaside marine promenade.

Things to See with a Hotel in Belize

From fascinating architecture to the stunning barrier reef, there is a wealth of sights to take in while in Belize. At the very heart of Belize City is The Swing Bridge which is crossed by just about everyone every day. A product of Liverpool’s ironworks, it was installed in 1923 and thought to be the only remaining manually operated bridge of its type in the world. Further downstream you will find Halouver Creek – a pretty place to take in numerous yachts and fishing boats. If archaeology is your thing, then head to Xunantunich, one of the most easily accessible and impressive Maya sites.

Things to Do in Belize

You could be snorkelling the world’s second largest barrier reef one day and trekking in the jungle the next thanks to Belize’s natural diversity. With 100 types of coral and 500 species of tropical fish, Belize is paradise for snorkelers and divers. The world renowned Blue Hole, with its underwater caves and walls, is a must for any self-respecting scuba diver. Other watersports include kayaking, windsurfing, stand-up paddle boarding, swimming and fishing. Of course, you don’t have to get wet to enjoy the fun: grab a cocktail, jump into a hammock and enjoy the perfect tropical holiday.
