Aughnanure Castle is a 16th Century castle built by the O'Flaherty family. The original castle, which stood in the exact same location, dates as far back as the early-14th Century. Located only two miles from the village of Oughterard, Aughnanure Castle is a popular destination for historical tourism. If you’re looking for a taste of Ireland’s rich history, then here is a good place to start.
The castle is built in a tower house formation. There’s a small guard lookout, two upper floors that would have been used for living and sleeping, and a lower floor for storage. The castle’s close proximity to the River Drimneen has left interesting caverns eroded into its lower stone foundations.
The grounds of the castle are also worth an exploration, especially the two courtyards. Legend has it that one of the courtyards once had a trap door that could be pulled to dispose of unwanted visitors. It’s always good to watch your step.
There is a small fee for entry to the castle, which is generally open on most days throughout the year. You can also find guided tours of the castle and the surrounding area. These operate regularly, but are worth researching in advance. The castle is easy to reach by bus or by car from the centre of Oughterard.
A visit to the ancient castle may inspire a craving for some modern luxurious living of your own. There are lots of highly rated hotels in the area around Aughnanure, where you too can feel like a king in the castle. Whether you’re ready to splash a little cash, or you’re looking for the best possible deal to match up with the best possible quality, there’s a little something for everyone in the area.
