While Alton itself is a small, rural community, the best time to visit the wider Taranaki region, where Alton is located, is generally during the summer months from December to February.

During this period, you'll experience the warmest and most settled weather, which is ideal for enjoying the region's outdoor activities. This includes exploring the Taranaki Coastal Walkway, which offers stunning ocean views, or hiking in Egmont National Park, home to the iconic Mount Taranaki. The longer daylight hours also allow for more extensive sightseeing.

Couples looking for a relaxing escape will appreciate the pleasant weather for scenic drives along Surf Highway 45, stopping at various beach towns and art galleries. The summer also brings a range of local markets and festivals across the Taranaki region, providing opportunities to experience local culture and produce.

For families, the summer months are superb for beach days at nearby Ōpunake or Manaia, where the warmer water makes swimming and other water sports more enjoyable.
