Akumal, Place of Turtles in Mayan, is located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, just 37 km south of Playa del Carmen and 27 km north of Tulum. Things to do: Akumal is a water-lovers' paradise on the beach in front of the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. Akumal itself is a small but thriving beach community situated on 2 beautiful bays - our condo is on the Half Moon bay which is picturesque, quiet and romantic. You can spend a whole vacation right on Half Moon bay without leaving the area, with a beautiful beach and wonderful little restaurants in walking distance. Akumal has its own small supermarkets, boutiques and several dive shops, one of them just a short walk from Hacienda de la Tortuga, and water sports facilities. Right in the area of Akumal is great snorkeling, scuba diving and deep-sea fishing. The condo is in walking distance of Yalku Lagoon which is a natural lagoon formation with crystal clear water -- a unique swimming and snorkeling experience. Several world famous Riviera Maya attractions are close by including the Xel Ha (15 minutes ) and Xcaret adventure parks, the towns of Playa del Carmen (1/2 hr), Tulum and Puerto Aventuras (20 min) and of course the renowned Maya archeological sites of Tulum (20 min), Coba (1 hour) and Chichen Itza (2 hrs)- plus many more Maya attractions are close by. Akumal in the Mayan language means ‘The Place of the Turtles” - sea turtles can be seen year round and their nesting season starts in May, during the months of July and August you can observe turtles nesting and baby turtles hatching. Nightly 'turtle walks' are available and can be arranged with the Akumal Ecological Center. Akumal has several shops for water-sports including open water diving, cenote/cavern diving (for which the area is world famous), snorkeling/catamaran trips, fishing and more. They all rent equipment and all have certified guides. Bicycles and golf carts are available for rental. Yoga classes and Spa services are available in the main beach area (1/2 mile from Hacienda de la Tortuga). How to get around: Akumal is a small relaxed beach community, a car is nice to go out to our many nearby activities but not necessary if you just want to kick back and explore Akumal. In that case there are bikes for rent (approx $8 per day) or golf carts (about $50 per day). How to get there: Guests can fly into either the Cancun International Airport (CUN) which is approx. 1 hour and 30 minutes from Akumal or the Tulum International airport (TQO) which is about 1 hr and 10 minutes by modern highway. The most popular methods of reaching Akumal are rental car, private airport shuttle or taxi. Public Bus transport is also available. We will provide you with a local recommendation for a private shuttle if you wish. The condo was the perfect size and it was nice to have all the amenities of both a hotel cleaning/water service and the full kitchen of a home. We rented a golf cart to get around which was so fun and everything was so close. The balcony and hammock overlooking the whole bay was breathtaking. We had awesome snorkeling right out our door and amazing food at la lunita, the jungle cafe, and la Buena vida. The condo was perfect! Watching the sunrise from our balcony each morning was spectacular. The restaurant downstairs is exquisite. A/C works well in bedroom and a great breeze comes through for the rest of the condo. Daily housekeeping is a great perk and the walk to Midway Food Store is short and easy to get some supplies. Gourmet restaurant on the ground floor, darling jungle breakfast place across the street. The view was beautiful from the balcony. We spent hours relaxing on the beach everyday on the lounge chairs in front of the building, and went snorkeling in the afternoons. We visited the Monkey refuge and took and excursion to the ruins. We walked to town and visited the restaurants- so charming. It was a wonderful vacation, thanks Cherri and all staff of Hacienda de la Tortuga. Now if you like to swim this isn’t a great spot. Very rocky and difficult to enter water. Snorkeling is nice but you must get far off shore. The condo was on 3rd floor and you must walk up. Also many up and down levels (steps) in condo itself, not conducive to older people. As mentioned food was good at restaurant below but the noise and loud talking was not enjoyable from noon till late at nite. My husband and I have been vacationing in Akumal for over 25 years and our stay at Hacienda de la Tortuga was by far the loveliest place we've ever stayed. From the location on the beach and laid back atmosphere of Half Moon Bay, it's the perfect little paradise to rest and relax! The condo was everything that is described in the VRBO description and Cheeri is a wonderful and responsive host. This property is perfect for 2 people. My wife and I spent 16 glorious days at the Hacienda de la Tortuga and it was the most relaxing vacation I've ever been on. This is our second year to stay in unit 8 and it really feels like home. The property has everything you need to let go and relax and just enjoy every minute of every day. The location on the beach is peaceful and perfect for just relaxing in a lounge chair under a palapa with your favorite cerveza. The location is also perfect if you like to snorkel, we are beginners of snorkeling but I can't imagine it gets much more beautiful for snorkeling than in Half Moon Bay. I highly recommend this property if you are looking for the perfect place to relax and recharge and enjoy each other's company. Also located within an easy bike ride or relaxing walk are 4-5 laid back relaxing delicious restaurants, in order of my favorites are La Buena Vida, Turtle Bay Café, Que Onda, La Lunita (located in building), and Taverna. Cherries has been so attentive in making sure out stay was perfect. We witnessed turtles hatching and making their way into the ocean right next to Tortuga as well as swam with turtles. The snorkeling was also amazing and we got some beautiful moments with adult turtles in the ocean. The room itself was always well kept and they had fresh water for us at all times. All the information she gave us was extremely helpful. We rented a golf cart to get around which was a lot of fun. Our big bonus was watching the turtles come ashore dig their nest and lay their eggs but you have to wait until around 12:30 or 1:00 in the morning to catch them. W On our last day there a nest of 96 turtles hatched and we got some great videos of the babies scurrying down to the water. It is very unusual for this to happen during the day so we were really blessed to be able to see a complete cycle. Condo #8 as the best view. ##### Patricia M. It is absolutely perfect, it has everything you need for a relaxing and beautiful vacation. The condo is beautiful and extremely comfortable and is well-appointed from the fully functional kitchen that is just like home. The bathroom was very spacious and the shower feels amazing after a day at the beach which is steps away right out your door. The condo has a very comfortable king size bed with great closet storage. The pool is very private and feels like it’s all yours. The deck overlooks the most beautiful blue water. The condo is located in North Akumal which is extremely quiet. On the premises is the La Lunita restaurant it opens at 1 pm and is absolutely delicious a great place for lunch and beautiful romantic dinners. The staff is great at Hacienda de la Tortuga. Also located an easy walk from the condo is La Buena Vida an on the beach restaurant bar that is one of the most unique and awesome places I’ve ever hung out a must do when in Akumal.
