"Fantastic place. Great home-cooked food cooked and served in a home-style atmosphere by the staff on a deck with amazing views. Would highly recommend as a base for exploring Addo. The property also has giraffes and sheep, both of which walked directly past our room!"

"My family and I had a very comfortable 3-night stay at Happy Lands and visited Addo Elephant Park each day. On arrival, we were welcomed by the lovely host family to a very peaceful setting. The cottage patio looks onto beautiful gardens with mature trees. My husband wasn’t able to join us on this holiday, and we’ve already decided that we’d love to visit again to show him the farm. "

You can take time to visit Addo Elephant Park - Nyati Section during your travels to Addo. While you're in the area, wander around the natural setting.
Elephants roam freely in Addo Elephant National Park, where guided safaris reveal the 'Big Five' and more. Nearby Schotia Private Game Reserve offers night drives, while hiking trails in Zuurberg section showcase spectacular mountain views.
There is no better safari geared up for families in the world. We had the best time ever as did our seven year old daughter, and the staff couldn’t have done any more for us. This place is THE gold standard in luxury safaris and Riverdene ensured it worked for children too without compromising quality for adults too. Cannot recommend highly enough and thanks so much to all the team!

Lovely hotel to stay at when visiting Addo. Rooms are huge and the bathroom is lovely, especially the outdoor shower. Only downside is there is no door so the light comes in as soon as the sun rises.
10-15 min drive to Addo, not much in the local area.
Breakfast was good, buffet selection and eggs cooked to order. Nice pool with towels and sunscreen provided which was a nice touch.

Everything from the early email exchanges arranging tours of Addo, to the welcome, the tour, the food, the room and the service was absolutely perfect. Having stayed in 100's of hotels in dozens of countries this would definitely be one of the best. The attention to detail and personal experience could not be faulted. As an example - we were booked for an official night drive via the Addo park but as we were running late there would of been no time to eat so without asking Edwin had arranged us...

We booked this place online as somewhere to base ourselves to explore Addo and surrounding area and the pictures don’t do it justice. From the moment we drove up the lemon grove drive I knew I’d made a good choice. An oasis of calm after a hectic drive down the garden route, two ponds frame your entrance whilst weaver bird nests hang from surrounding trees. We had a wonderful stay at Hitgeheim Country Lodge. The road in is a little rough, but as it is an eco reserve, that is to be expected and part of the experience. The reward is the wildlife along the way, and we were lucky enough to encounter some zebras. We chose a room with a private pool, which was absolutely beautiful and made our stay feel extra special. We loved the port provided and enjoyed a delicious Taste of South Africa dinner in the restaurant. A lovely final touch was having our car...

This was a gem, large well appointed rooms set in lovely gardens and close to the Addo Game Reserve, the breakfast area outside was lovely, for dinner ate in a separate restaurant onsite, also in a lovely setting and the food was good though the wine choice: 1 white, 1 red and 1 rose was a little limited but we would come back.

Historic country hotel with great ambience and wonderful staff. We arrived during a cold snap to a warm welcome. There was a lovely wood fire burning in the reception/sitting area and we were offered tea/coffee with scones immediately after checking in. We were shown to our rooms which were a 2 minute walk from the main hotel area. The rooms were very spacious and clean, with all the amenities.

When is the best time to go to Addo?
The best time to visit Addo is during the dry winter months, from May to September.
During this period, the vegetation is sparse, making it much easier to spot wildlife as animals gather around the limited water sources. The weather is generally mild and pleasant, with clear skies and less humidity, which is ideal for game drives and outdoor activities. Mornings and evenings can be cool, so it's wise to pack layers.
For those looking for the best wildlife viewing opportunities, particularly for spotting elephants, these months are perfect. The drier conditions mean animals are more active and visible, offering excellent photographic chances. This time of year also has fewer mosquitoes, contributing to a more comfortable experience.
If you prefer warmer weather and don't mind the occasional rain shower, the shoulder seasons of April and October can also be good. The park is less crowded, and you might see some migratory birds returning.
