"Lovely interesting place, friendly welcome. Hostel owners had time to talk and are very proud of their little jewel in Ennis. I highly recommend it, even in winter with floods threatening. Unfortunately didn't get to sample the restaurant which I hear is amazing. We will be returning."

Pocket Guide: 2 Stars Hotels in Limerick

Limerick is a university city with a strong emphasis on business and technology so there’s no shortage of budget accommodation whether it’s in one of the campus villages like Plassey Park or near the National Technology Park in Castletroy. Budget accommodation and B&Bs can also be found in the city centre close to all the main attractions. If you are in town for one night or researching study at the University of Limerick it makes sense to choose affordable accommodation.

Cultural Attractions and Festivals in Limerick

Budget hotels and friendly guesthouses can be found close to the main cultural attractions such as the 12th century St Mary’s Cathedral, 13th century King John’s Castle, the Hunt Museum, Frank McCourt Museum, the Treaty Stone, Limerick Museum and more. The city was the setting for the film version of Frank McCourt’s popular novel Angela’s Ashes and it’s possible to do a walking tour of the main scenes. Limerick is a friendly city and street ambassadors are employed to show visitors around the main attractions.

Limerick City Gallery of Art on Pery Square is a must visit for contemporary art exhibitions and has a permanent collection of Irish art showing work from the early 18th Century to 20th Century. EVA International is Limerick’s major contemporary visual art event - Ireland’s Biennial, which includes work by local and international artists. It is based at the Limerick City Gallery of Art but also takes place in public spaces throughout the city.

Budget Hotels for Sports and Nature

If you enjoy walking you can find budget accommodation slightly further afield in the University buildings near Castletroy or Plassey Park - there are several student villages, or regions, which may offer good deals on accommodation throughout the year. They are close to the main parks and the Shannon for walks over the bridge into neighbouring County Clare and beyond. They are also relatively close to Shannon Airport, one budget accommodation venue being just 10 miles away. Parking on site is usually available and if you don’t want to walk into town every day staff are happy to arrange transport and taxis.

For a relaxing break choose a budget hotel near to People’s Park - Limerick’s main parkland area, Thomond Park, the university recreation grounds or Gaelic Ground. You will also find B&Bs and cheaper accommodation further afield in neighbouring suburbs and popular tourist villages like Adare, a short drive out of Limerick. Staying in Adare gives you access to the stunning countryside around Lough Gur, sporting activities and heritage sites and you can test your golfing skills on one of its two golf courses.

There is no shortage of budget hotels and guest houses in Limerick - it is a city that caters to a range of visitors and the emphasis is on startup businesses, new technology and further education. Many offer free breakfasts, toiletries and Wi-Fi to make your wallet stretch a little further. Staying in the city centre means the main attractions are within walking distance so there’s no need to use public transport.
