Very charming hotel, close to everything. Staff was great. Room was a little small (that's fairly normal in Europe) and was a bit dark, but it was very nicely appointed and functional. Great breakfast terrace and room. Very nice place to stay.
Located in the heart of Tropea, well-known tourist destination on Calabria coast and a few minutes walk from the beach …More
We visited with our children (aged 10 and 12) at the very end of October 2013, when most of Tropea (and Italy) is closing down its tourist facilities, so our comments relate to that period and we can't comment on what it is like in high season. We had a lovely time (lucky to have sunshine every day; 21-25 degrees) and really enjoyed the hotel as a base from which to explore Tropea and the surrounding region.
The location, just outside the old town, worked both for walking into town (10 mins down a gentle hill) and for (free) parking and exploring Capo Vaticano.
There's no real view to speak of but the pool is nice. We got a family room (108), booked on the internet, and had no idea what form that would take. It turned out to be excellent! One entrance onto a small hall, from which you access three rooms: a twin with bunk beds, a bathroom (shower, not bath) and a double room (two singles attached - gap hardly noticeable) with TV, off which there was a balcony. It meant you could put the kids to bed and then stay up without disturbing them, with assurance of their safety.
The hotel restaurant closed the night we arrived but there were plenty of good places to eat in the town. Good breakfast selection, but all self service (coffee from machines, pre-cooked bacon & scrambled eggs, fresh croissants, cereal, yoghurt, toast, cold meats & cheese). Nice facilities, friendly staff (some spoke English), very clean. Comfy beds. Recommend it!

I found the hotel to be very good service and good location but the appearance of the rooms from the outside really felt more like a hostel than a hotel. The stove didn't work (although we didn't really want to cook anyway).
The bathroom shower was really hard to negotiate because it was so tiny, but overall we enjoyed our stay and the staff were really friendly and accommodating.
Hotel La porta del mare is a great hotel and is ideally situated for the centre of Tropea (5 minutes walk). It is extremely unique and the architecture at the entrance to the hotel is fantastic. It is basic, but the staff are wonderful and the views from the terrace (where one has breakfast) are stunning. We had a fabulous time!

"Excellent small hotel or B&B near center of Tropea."
Pricey but excellent. Strong point was front desk service via Ms. Magdellana who personally showed me the way to the supermarket and Ms. Rosella who demystified the satellite TV system so that I could view the one English channel among the 400+ choices and who arranged the airport taxi at 5 AM via Mr. Francesco who was excellent and skilled in driving the winding narrow cliffside roadways to the SUF Lamezia Terme airport. No trains or buses were available at that hour. Ms. Rosella also had the electrical outage fixed during the last day of my stay. The morning breakfast buffet in the garden was great only flaw was absence of hot food and cappuccino. The bed was extremely comfortable and the room furnishings were modern and the shower space was ideal. Some street noise particularly on weekends. Many excellent restaurants in immediate vicinity. I preferred the non tourist areas because of better prices and local ambience. Most
foreign tourists are German speaking so English is not widely spoken or understood. Ground transport from SUF Lamezia Terme airport is not that convenient. It is necessary to have a cell phone to arrange free transport from the Tropea train station. The train runs infrequently in September and is crowded with only one car on the day I used it. Beach is the highlight. Expensive boat trips were generally not available in September. Overall impressed with this small hotel and its location and would return in a heart beat if only I could afford it.

We rented a two bedroom apartment in the lovely old building a few metres down the cobbled street from the main Residenza Il Duomo building in which the reception and rooftop breakfast terrace are located.
The apartment was perfect, tucked away and undisturbed yet moments from the closest piaza. Many of Tropea's friendly and excellent restaurants in the historic old town are within a five minute stroll through the beautiful lanes.
Add to this friendly and efficient maid service, crisp linen, creative and generous breakfasts with unbelievable views to gaze at whilst sipping your freshly served espresso and you start to really smile and relax smug in the knowledge that you have discovered a true gem :)

The Hotel is wonderful, the staff extremley helpful, loved the pool.
If you are looking to have a massage I would not recommend it as we did not have a pleasant experience. The Masseuse was on her mobile whilst giving us a massage, not really interested in what she was doing.
The food did not vary much the whole time we were there, also it does carter to German tourist.
