Santa Barbara de Samana – The main activity in this small city is whale watching. The best time to see whales is between January and March when around one hundred individuals can be seen in the bay at any one time. Las Terrenas – One of the most upmarket towns on the peninsula, Las Terrenas boasts a wide choice of bars and restaurants, making it a great destination for a night out. The town’s beach is also one of the most beautiful in the area, drawing visitors from across the island and from further afield.

Las Galeras – Very sleepy and incredibly laid back, the small town of Las Galeras is the perfect destination for a day of relaxation. The town’s coast boasts some of the most secluded beaches in the Dominican Republic, so head to this pretty spot if you want to find your very own piece of paradise.

El Limon – Located on the north coast of the peninsula, this rural part of Samana is home to the stunning El Limon waterfall. The perfect destination for a day out in the Dominican Republic’s beautiful countryside, El Limon also offers opportunities for horse riding and hiking.

The main sight to see in Samana is the humpback whale migration. The great views available from Santa Barbara de Samana, and the sheer number of whales in the bay in the early spring, guarantee you sightings of these colossal creatures. The area is also home to a number of natural landmarks including the Boca de Diablo, or Mouth of the Devil, an impressive blowhole in the cliffs around 7km from Santa Barbara de Samana. The peninsula’s other sights include the characterful Malecon in Santa Barbara de Samana, the secluded beaches of Las Galeras and the waterfall at El Limon.
