Go to a screening of a rare classic film in this historic theater palace that has a special place in the hearts of Tampa’s local residents.

Tampa Theatre is an iconic cinema considered one of the main attractions of Tampa’s Uptown District. The theatre is known for its diverse cinematic showings, ranging from Hollywood blockbusters to indie films and documentaries. Snap photos of its elegant façade, which has become part of the city’s cultural zeitgeist.

Consider the intriguing history of the movie theatre complex. It was built in 1926 as one of the first places in the area to offer air conditioning, making it popular with locals looking to take shelter from the scorching summer days. The movie palace allowed the common person to escape his worries in an opulent environment for a low fee.

See the building at night, when its Tampa sign is illuminated. Enter the building to find a Mediterranean-style courtyard full of statues and flowers. The ceiling portrays a starry sky. Attend one of the many events throughout the year, including showings of classic movies, concerts and events.

Watch a rare screening of an intriguing film from the comfort of the theatre’s seats. Hear the sweet melodies of the Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ instrument that is played before evening showings. Although the cinema converted to digital picture and sound in 2013, it still screens certain productions with old-fashioned film reels.

Note that the cinema is an important part of the local community. It is a non-profit organization, relying on donations from members and sponsors. Committees were formed in the 1970s to prevent the movie theatre from going out of business.

Check times and availability on the theatre’s official website. The box office is open to call on weekdays from morning until late afternoon and also evenings and weekends 30 minutes before the first show until 30 minutes after the last show.

The Tampa Theatre is in the Uptown District of Tampa, just a few blocks east of the Hillsborough River. Take a bus to one of the stops in the vicinity. Visit nearby highlights, including the Tampa Museum of Art, the David A. Straz, Jr. Centre for the Performing Arts and the TECO Theatre.
