My husband and I needed a place to stay the night before the Maine Marathon. This was perfect. Check in started with a very fresh chocolate chip cookie. We were delighted to find a massage reclining chair in our room which came in use for our calves post-marathon. The room was "roomy" and clean. Lots of space for your things. The only negative was we had a king bed, but I found the pillows to not be firm enough (though we had 3 each). There was old wallpaper, but I didn't come to Portland for the walls do that didn't bother us at all. Vouchers were provided for a very large breakfast buffet, but we only eat bananas and energy supplements so unfortunately we didn't reap the benefits. We will definitely be back, especially because they gave us a complimentary 12:30 check out because we were running. We were able to shower which was greatly appreciated.
Everything about the stay was fantastic as one would expect from a Marriott. However the outstanding feature was the General Manager Ed Palmer. It had snowed heavily and when I got up early to clear our car, I noticed Marriott staff clearing the cars in the lot. It was when I went to find the manager to thank him/her for the service that I realized that it was Ed Palmer, the general manager with senior staff that were clearing the snow ladden cars.
It was also evident from the interactions I witnessed during the day that this Ed treated his staff extremely well, and the atmosphere engendered by Ed made this one of our most memorable stays.
My mother has mobility issues and when asked to switch rooms from second floor to first the staff helped out alot. We stayed for two night with no problems at all. The lady who does the breakfast even allowed me to take the food down to our room so Mom WOULDN'T have to climb the stairs.
The room was spotless! The breakfast was a real breakfast with eggs, ham, waffles, fruit and traditional continental items. The staff was polite and efficient. When I awoke on the second day to a severe ice storm, they had complimentary scrapers at the desk, and one of the hotel staff saw me struggling with breaking the ice (I have arthritis) and he came over to assist! Incredible and unexpected value for the price!
