“Excellent hotel in good location.”

The Hotel is in the pedestrianised part of Rethymno Old Town, so not possible to bring a car to the door. Parking is about 200 meters away in a free car park or on the street near the police station, to the west of the Old Town, with a level walk to the hotel. This did not present any problems, but we did not realise this at the time of booking. Hotel is lovely, well kept, beautiful patio area used for outdoor breakfast. Snacks available at other times, also available to the public. Staff couldn't be more helpful. Free WiFi and a computer for guests to use. Rooms a good size (we had a junior suite) very well appointed. Hotel is in a residential street with the shops and restaurants of the Old Town, harbour and Fort about 5 minutes walk away, so quiet surroundings yet close to activities. Eating at the harbourside restaurants can be expensive, away from this area is much better value. We also walked to the sandy beach to the east of the harbour (about 20 minutes level walk) for swimming, and you can hire loungers & parasols etc. We stayed for a week and had a great time. We preferred Rethymno to the other large towns we visited (Chania and Iraklion).

Area recommendations
Old Town in Rethymno is a pedestrianised area with lots of shops, restaurants and bars, but also lived in and used by locals. Sandy beach to the east of the Old Town is within walking distance.
When to go
We went mid-October. This is right at the end of the tourist season, things start to close at the end of the month. It was pleasantly warm (25-28C) but we had some rain. Just at the start of the rainy season. The summer might be too hot for some.
Getting around
We hired a car, little traffic in October and easy parking. Visit the south coast.

“Convenient, convivial, central and clean”

Spacious rooms, comfortable furniture, pleasant outdoor breakfast area under the bouganvillea, right in the middle of Rethymno old town but still within walking distance from the beach, and also convenient for the car park. Each room has air conditioning and heating (we didn't need the heating!), good storage, and plenty of water. Access to the rooms is "scattered" so you don't bump into people as you come and go, and it feels very private. Very friendly and helpful staff, attentive without being obsequious. Our only criticism was the "power shower" in our room which didn't work, and was too small to be comfortable as an ordinary shower (but not all rooms have those - our first room had an excellent bathroom and we moved because we wanted more light). We would certainly come back to Casa Vitae.

Area recommendations
Definitely recommend the old town - pedestrian streets lined with interesting shops, tavernas and bars which, although they stay open late, are not rowdy or loud. Find the beach beyond the port, and walk (or cycle) for miles and miles of fine yellow sand, or hire a bed and umbrella for the day and just enjoy. By all means enjoy a sit down meal, but don't dismiss the excellent and very cheap "to go" gyros (kebabs) served with tzaziki, salad and chips (all in the pita!).

“Be very careful”

We booked our main room in April for our holiday in October, we therefore were very disappointed when given what were probably the two worst rooms in the hotel. The double was below ground level and was dark and airless , the single in annex was a back packers delight complete with sink unit in the room. Its other interesting feature was the need to switch hot water on 30 minutes before use! We had called at the hotel a few days before booking in to see if we could view our rooms but were told this was impossible as they were all full. The hotel looked fine and the courtyard was pretty so we felt satisfied .On seeing our rooms we asked to be moved to others but were again told that all rooms were takenI I have no doubt that there were good rooms there but can only review the rooms we were given so be sure if you are booking that you do not get the basement or backpackers rooms However, We must say that the manager and her daughter were pleasant but not able to help with our dissatisfaction The use of a P.C. was good.

“Charing and Amazing Hotel, will definitely revisit.”

Beautiful small villa, cosy and warm welcoming place. you will feel at home or visiting some friends. the hotel location is excellent, not far form the parking lot and right in the middle of the old city. it is also very close to the old fortress. The ladies running the hotel are very welcoming and very helpful. if you are seeking a hotel where you really feel at home while you can enjoy the busy old town of Retymnon, this is the right place to be. rooms are spacious and well equipped. Breakfast is served on a small porch surrounded by flowers and green. this Hotel has all the luxury of a big chain hotel and much more. ideal for honeymooners. for lunch and dinner, the small tavernas are few steps round the corner where you can have the best Greek food ever.

“Couldn't have been better”

Casa Vitae is a very nice place in the old town of Rethymno. But what made the stay special was the service provided not only by all the hotel employees but by pretty much all the people in Crete. Special thanks also to Maria from Casa Vitae, she went above and beyond in trying to solve our touristy problems. It was simply the best customer service my wife and I have experienced in all our holidays in the past (Thailand, Mexico, NYC, Paris, Madrid, etc) In addition, we would also thank Panos, our private driver/guide who showed/drove us around in Crete. If you need car service in Crete and you are staying in Casa Vitae, then ask Maria to request Panos' car services. For marketing researchers: In a scale from 0 to 10, I would rate/recommend the hotel to friends or colleagues with a score of 9 (Not a 10 because the breakfast lacked some variety, otherwise everything was perfect).

“Wonderful stay at the Quaint Casa Vitae”

Case Vitae is is an old Venetian villa with 8 rooms that is converted into a boutique hotel in Rethenon, Crete. We loved our stay, our room took us into the old world with all the modern conveniences! The location was also close enough to the old town but still had its privacy. I highly recommend this place; it's really perfect. The only downside is that its a bit tough to find when you get there the first time.

“It is an all season- hotel.”

It was such a pleasant time in Crete because the island was not crowded with tourists and the weather was very nice. Not hot at all but not so cold either. It was not easy to find the hotel first as we travelled from Irakleon with a rented a car . But we called to the hotel Casa Vitae to give instructions to people whom we asked directions. As we went close to the hotel, we called them again and they told us to park our car at where we were and they came to pick us up. So it was a personal and nice gesture. As we walked with the person who came to pick us up we felt as if we had already known her. With not so many customers at the hotel we were able to appreciate the kind and professional manners of empoyees of the hotel from the owner, to the chamber maid, who all resonated the combination of professional etchics and personal touch at the same time. We will highly recommend Casa Vitae Retimnon to your customers for the location, for what one gets for the price paid; for the quality of good services, for their friendly personal welcome and fairwell, for the excellent breakfasts and for gentle assitance and nice and kind, gentle and knowledgable talk they engage in. It was a wonderful experience in a historical once family house of the owner herself. We send our very best to every one out there from the kind owner to the chamber maids whom made hospitality a tradition. It was truly excellent and exceptional in at this time of the year.

“wow what an amazing place!”

Our experience at Casa Vitae was wonderful. The staff and the owners(on site!) were so friendly and very helpful in answering any questions or concerns. We were there for a week and when we asked where we could do laundry they very kindly let us use there facility, as the laundromats are not open in the off season. We really enjoyed walking everywhere. The location of the hotel allowed us to explore new parts of the town everyday. The bus terminal is only a 5 min. walk and there are buses running to both ends of the island all day long.We had a lovely courtyard to have breakfast in every morning. We highly recommend Casa Vitae to anyone lucky enough to travel to Crete.

Traveller's tip
The nightlife on the island has a late start. Most people don't head out until after 9:00 because the shops are open until 8:00 everynight. The partying continues until the wee hours of the morning.

Rethimnon, Greece: Presided over by a 16th-century Venetian fortress, Rethimnon old town is a warren of pastel-coloured Venetian mansions housing hip bars and eateries, antique stores and crafts shops, and a former mosque with a towering 19th-century minaret. The old Venetian harbour is lined with upmarket seafood tavernas, and guarded by a lighthouse. The palm-fringed sand beach lies east of town, overlooked by a string of big, modern hotels and souvenir shops.
