Blacksmiths Arms Inn

Posted 29-Nov-2014 on Hotels
V easy to find in a tiny, pretty village. Greeted warmly. Room clean & q nicely decorated, my friend a&I had a twin room (room 4). Plenty parking (but car park badly lit). Loads of tea/coffee & toiletries & beds comfy (but squeaky). Shame you could only see the TV from 1 bed & there was only a bedside table & lamp next to that bed too. Loo VERY noisy to flush so we didn't at night, & the thing which kept the shower head up was broken, so it rested at chest height. Though the hotel advertised wifi, we couldn't get it in our room & we wanted to google things to do the following day. My friend got a tiny bit of signal if she sat on the stairs. I got intermittent signal only if I sat in the bar downstairs- unfortunately, a member of staff whose name begins with T, was drunkenly screeching in there until late with her son, who looked about 13. I left after she told the Landlord at the top of her voice that she was going to urinate on his Sunday dinner in work the next day. We saw her at breakfast in the morning, seemingly v hungover. She was talking to the guests at the next table how terrible she felt & how drunk she was the night before. However, the breakfast was really nice & there was plenty of it! Didn't eat in the restaurant as seemed a little expensive, though same food at same prices available at a couple local pubs - not much choice locally unless you go into town. Good location in between Whitby/Scarborough.

Overpriced, rooms need a refurb.

We had a 4 poster room, which is described as 'sumptuously fitted with comfortable furnishings. Featuring free Wi-Fi, flat screen television and digital channel'. It was not sumptuous. The bed was very lumpy, the TV is small for the size of the room, can't be seen properly because of the bed frame, the shower was a cheap mixer type and very difficult to control or get the pressure right, there was black mould on the bath fittings. I know it's an old building, but in this day and age for the price being charged it needs an update to the rooms. Any premier Inn is far superior and cheaper. Not worth the money for the standard of the room. I would not recommend at the prices charged.

Superb Service

I was greeted by a very friendly lady (sorry I didn't catch your name). Who was immediately hit by the hurdle that hotels.com hadn't sent her a booking confirmation. I'm sure this would have been a major issue with some b&b's with lesser customer service skills, but not here! It was not a problem whatsoever, she found me a room in the main pub which was very nicely and cleanly presented (and more than just 2 'proper' tea bags!!!!). I asked if it was ok for me to take my laptop down into the bar to work - again not a problem. The free wifi was more than adequate for what I needed. Throughout my evening there which encompassed a very nice bit of Steak I witnessed the aforementioned lady (the owner??) deal with several customers throwing various issues at her (turning up for their table early, dietary requirements, turning up for a room without booking etc) and all were handled in the same, polite and welcoming manner - again many of these issues would have thrown less experienced employees. Breakfast was delicious (even if I did get told off for sitting in the wrong seat) Overall I can't recommend this lovely old characterful inn enough! Thankyou

Having had a meal there a few years ago, we always promised ourselves that we would return, thinking it would be sooner. We were not disappointed, if you stay B&B be sure to have the evening meal, I had the sirloin steak with a complimentary peppercorn sauce, delicious! The staff make you feel right at home and our room was very good too,we will definitely return sooner rather than later! "One of the nicest pictures there too that I have ever seen of the queen".

Pros: Location was good staff were friendly
Cons: Shower over the bath was adequate but could be improved.
