A beautiful Spot In The Country

Posted 26-Nov-2014
Pros: The size of the room and bathroom, the reception rooms and restaurant, the drive to the hotel and the grounds, the breakfast on Saturday morning
Cons: A little more attention to dusting in our room, fixtures and fitting in need of refurbishment, Sunday morning breakfast
Location: York (Jorvik Vicking Centre, Railway Museum, Chocolate Museum), Harrogate (Spa), Beningborough Hall
Turned up at Aldwark Manor on a dark, rainy, misty night. That said, the postcode in a Sat nav gets you right to the front door and the hotel looks very inviting on such a night. Our room was in the original manor (four poster bed, large room, ready for some tlc), not the modern extension, where the rooms are more minimalist. The breakfast on the first morning was excellent (Saturday), though the restaurant was only a quarter full. It was a different experience on the Sunday morning, when the restaurant was full and the service was visibly suffering. We had a meal in the restaurant on the Saturday evening which was excellent, though they need to provide a few more crackers with the cheese board. Plus points were the service, the lamb and the wine. There are plenty of pleasant rooms for an after dinner drink as well. In the dry morning light, the hotel is very picturesque, is located in some very pleasant surroundings and, at the end of an evening, strolling by the golf course, almost blistfully silent.

Pros: The staff were helpful and friendly. The pool area was excellent well maintained and clean.
Location: We used the hotel for a private family function and therefore did not attempt to venture out. Location peaceful and secluded.
The hotel was quiet and well maintained. The staff friendly and accommodating. Breakfast and evening meals were very good. Eating was a peaceful experience without anyone trying to hurry you on. An alround good experience.

Weren't happy with room we were initially given but ghe manageress went out of her way to accommodate us. The food was good but expensive for what we had. Had previously chosen from online menu which was changed and not updated Wonderful historic feel , beautiful old building. Good choice for a special occasion

Alwark manor is a fabulous old building set in the middle of a lovely golf course and beautiful countryside. We enjoyed a superb treatment in the spa. The staff were all very polite and welcoming. Unfortunately, it is a tired old building that needs Q hotels to spend some money on it and some extra staff. The place needs a complete renovation... furniture needs replacing... I wanted to put a beer mat under the wobbly table in the restaurant and clean the upholstery. the floor was filthy my feet were sticking to the floor. We booked an evening meal. I had to send the main back... it was not edible. Breakfast is buffet style with plenty of choice... but, cold wet plates and over cooked fried eggs swimming in grease sat under the hot plate for two long the same with the sausages, mushrooms and bacon, I had a 5 oclock shadow by the time the toaster delivered my toast. The staff tried hard and you could sense an apology coming every time you spoke to someone.

The staff were polite and helpful. The restaurant was good. Will recommend this. I was disappointed that the staff in the spa were not able to help us with the information we wanted. So my friend and I decided to forgo it. Pity.

Wouldn't return...

We visited the hotel for a weekend break to celebrate my partners birthday. There were 2 things we wanted to do, relax in the spa and watch the boxing! Firstly we arrived at the spa and were told we were not allowed to have a robe as we weren't having treatments and robes were only supplied if you were booked for treatments or were staying over at the hotel. When we explained that we were staying at the hotel we were told that they had run out of robes anyway so we couldn't have one but we could have a towel! At 6 months pregnant, the towel provided didn't even wrap around me! There was only 4 beds available in the "spa" all of which were taken (by towels and personal belongings, not actual people), so my partner and I sat on the bench at the side of the pool...hardly relaxing?! That evening we went to the bar for food and were surprised when all 3 course arrived at once! Once sorted it then took 30 minutes for our main course to arrive after the Starter. I ordered carbonara which was clearly reheated after arriving early, I wouldn't recommend that. Next we wanted to go to the Terrace bar to watch the big fight (Froch vs.Groves). I emailed the hotel earlier in the week to confirm it was on, as if not we were happy to head out into York to find somewhere else to watch it. The hotel emailed me back to confirm it was definitely being shown in their sports bar. We checked with 3 different people at the hotel that day to double check and they all said it would be on in the sports bar....Great! When we arrived at the bar 15 mins before the boxing was due to start, we were concerned when it wasn't on, only to be told that actually it wouldn't be on after all as it was pay per view. As you can imagine we were really annoyed by this point as we went out of our way to make sure we could watch the fight at the hotel. This topped off a bad day and made for an overall really disappointing experience. The Service wasn't great, the spa was nothing more than a swimming pool with a couple of beds (good luck in getting one) and the food was average. We won't be returning in a hurry and just disappointed that we wasted so much money on staying at Aldwark Manor...

Staff were really accommodating and pleasant throughout our stay. The room was very hot at night and we couldn't open the window as there was a bees nest directly outside - not that it could be helped. Breakfast was good and overall we had a really nice stay.
