“Perfect location and friendly staff.”

Nice comfortable clean hotel, in a perfect location. Good buffet continental breakfast included in the price. Our double room had a king size bed and a lovely view overlooking the square. Highly recommended.

“Wonderful location and old school charm”

A proper Italian city hotel,with its own charm and character. The location is fabulous, right on one of the nicest piazzas in Lucca but not at all noisy. The hotel has loads of charm, and the staff are very good though breakfast service was a bit curt (but not at all bad). Definitely a place I would recommend and stay in again.

“second visit”

the first time we stayed here we had large room on the first floor, that was a four day stay and we were upgraded to a suite on last night as renovations caused plaster to fall from the ceiling, so were a little dissapointed to find room this time on the third floor which was much smaller and a little cramped but have to say the hotel is great value for the price,great location and lovely old style interior full of old fixtures etc and the breakfast is great and plenty of it if you go early!! Staff very helpful would stay here again. Lucca is a gem !

“Lovely historic hotel”

The Universo is an excellent hotel, ideally situated in the historical centre of Lucca. The staff are friendly and efficient and the rooms are clean and comfortable. A room safe would however be a welcome addition. There is a good buffet breakfast which includes raw ham, mortadella, cheese, eggs, cerials,fruit and very good assorted rolls and pastries. The coffee is always hot and good. The juice, however, is more like a cordial . We very much enjoyed our stay and would recommend the Universo to those who like a hotel with character and history.

While the service wasn't entirely warm, it was cordial enough. The hotel, despite its age had a pleasant facade. Can't beat the location!!!

“A very enjoyable stay”

We stayed at the Universo for 3 nights for a friend's wedding. It overlooks one of Lucca's beautiful piazzas and is perfectly positioned for exploring the town. The reception staff were friendly and courteous, spoke very good english and the check in process was quick and efficient. We stayed in a room at the back of the hotel which was a decent size compared to other hotels we had stayed in in Florence & Pisa, but overlooked the bins, so no view of the piazza and woken up with the bin men (but only at about 8am). There was a fairly ineffectual air conditioning unit, but the room was generally quite cool and airy. Only slight issue was an unfeasibly large fixed showerhead in a very small shower cubicle! Having said that, there was a constant supply of hot water, and very strong water pressure. Breakfast was fairly standard continental (but with very good fresh fruit juice, unlike many other places we stayed), served till 10am but made all the more enjoyable by the fact that you could sit outside under canapies at the front of the hotel every morning and enjoy your food! Overall, a very comfortable and pleasant stay.

“A convenient and good hotel”

Ideal location for accessing the sites of Lucca and within 10 minutes of access to the bus services and trains to visit a range of places outside Lucca - Pisa, Florence, the seaside resort of Viareggio (and buses and trains are not expensive), without the hassle of having a hire car especially as there is very limited possibilities for having a car within the walled town. We hired a car only for the second part of our hoiiday. Were given a room looking out to the front of the hotel over the quiet square facing the theatre and it ensured good night's sleep. Breakfast was good and staff friendly. Plenty of good restaurants nearby. Only one minor issue, the small size of the shower area. A tight squeeze!

“Very Recommendable”

Quiet hotel in good central position, helpful staff. Rooms medium compact but with plenty of storage and nearly all with view out to Piazzas - double glazing and air-con excellent.

“Nice hotel, nice location, great town”

Hotel Universo is a very nice, typical 'period' Italian hotel. Nice period building with pleasant decoration in an excellent location (as others have commented, right in the old town but only 5 mins from train station, bus station, etc). Breakfast was good (again, typical Italian buffet, all good food though). No restaurant at Hotel, but again that's pretty typical and not a loss as Lucca has more than enough good restaurants to mean you can eat somewhere different every night if you want. We really enjoyed our stay and have no hesitation in recommending this hotel
