Spotless with a warm welcome

Posted 17-Apr-2014
Pros: The location, cleanliness and helpfulness of the staff.
Cons: Hard to say really, maybe bigger TV's in the rooms and a larger selection of hot beverages in the rooms?
Location: The location is right in the heart of the city and everything is close by. Edinburgh castle, HM Britannia 15 mins by bus.
Arrived at 10am to be told we had been given a room upgrade for nothing which was warmly welcomed. Reception staff and concierge very accommodating and we left our luggage with them whilst we went out to explore the city which wasn't a problem. Room was spotlessly clean, however the bed was way to soft for our liking. We slept reasonably well albeit we were at the front of the hotel and by 6am in the morning it got very noisy outside with the traffic going past the window. Breakfast is treated with military precision, as you arrive the staff talk to one another through personal radios and you are greeted by someone who takes you to your table, there isn't anything more you could want for on the menu, full English (of is it Scottish?), cereals, fruit, cold buffet etc. The waiters and waitresses go about their business with beaming smiles and nothing is too much trouble for them.

Honeymoon

Posted 08-Apr-2014
Pros: Perfect location right in the heart of Edinburgh the sights, shops bars and restaurants, everything within walking distance. The cleanliness and staf.
Location: Fantastic shops all right outside the hotel, restaurants bars and cocktails bars line the street and of course the castle. I would recommend Gusto.
Fantastic hotel, the staff could not do enough for you. When they found out it was our honeymoon they up-graded our room and scattered petals on the bed and left chocolates for us. The staff were all so very friendly and helpful.

Avoid room 096!

Posted 26-Mar-2014
Pros: Friendly and efficient staff, responsive management team and a hotel full of character that should be cherished
Cons: Breakfast routine to avoid queueing. The use of rooms above the ballroom when there is a function taking place.
Location: Lots. Lovely position in a beautiful city.
The hotel has lots of character and I can't stress enough that the staff were fantastic however, the rooms above the ballroom should only be used by guests attending the function of the night or not used at all. I experienced distress because this did not occur for us. I must say that the hotel manager rectified this situation appropriately. My husband was not happy with the queues at breakfast.

We really enjoyed staying here!

Posted 18-Mar-2014
Pros: Elegant, clean, friendly. And a good central location
Location: Very central, near good restaurants, at the edge of the (Georgian) New Town, the Old Town just a short walk away.
We came to Edinburgh for a birthday celebration, so took a lot of care over choosing the hotel. And we chose the right one! It is a beautiful hotel, elegant and very clean. Plus, the location is excellent, and the staff were friendly and helpful. We had a lovely time, and if (when!) we go back to Edinburgh, we'll definitely be staying at the George again!

Great hotel - will stay again when in Edinburgh

Posted 09-Mar-2014
I stayed here for 2 nights with work and from the moment I walked in to the moment I left, the staff were impeccable. I had quite a heavy package delivered ahead of me to the hotel, it needed to be brought up on a trolley when I wanted to collect it. It was no trouble at all to them, even loaded it into a taxi for me. I would strongly recommend the hotel. The only criticism is that the tea bags they used were terrible. Everything else was excellent.

Nice Hotel Shame about room location

Posted 24-Feb-2014
Pros: The staff were very nice and pleasant & hotel was clean and beautiful inside.
Cons: Couple of rooms could do with better glazing especially the ones over the access road. The noise is ridiculous.
Location: Tigerlily restaurant for food, For the money it is amazing. The stand comedy club for some live stand up, proper funny get there early for a seat.
The George hotel is beautiful and stunning and the staff are welcoming and professional. The hotel itself was better than i expected but it was the room (which to be honest is what your paying for) that let the hotel down. I'm sure 90% of the other rooms did not have this problem it was just bad luck for my wife and i. We were told that we had been upgraded from a deluxe to a super deluxe and to honest i wish they hadn't bothered as i suspect the original room would have been smaller but better. Our room was on the first floor and was directly over the access road / alley to the rear (Room 160) of the hotel and other buildings, so all you could hear were cars and people talking that had nipped out the back for there ciggy break or on there way to work or generally walking around, which in itself wasn't too bad but when the emptied the glass bottle skips early in the morning the racket was horrendous. A couple of the rooms could definitely do with some decent windows because the ones i our room did not keep the noise out at all. We could have complained but as we were only there two nights we didn't see much point.

Good Value for Location

Posted 24-Feb-2014
The hotel is in an excellent location. Although in the centre of Edinburgh it is in an upmarket area which was much less noisy than we anticipated. The reception area of the hotel was very impressive with the ambience of a sophisticated bygone era. However, while there was nothing wrong with the bedroom area and the bedroom itself, it was something of a let down after the reception area. The bedroom and ensuite were on the small side and the room was slightly dated, particularly the television set. A note in the room warns of a large queue for breakfast and the reality was even worse than might have been expected! However, the staff were clearly doing their best to alleviate the situation and once in the dining room there was no feeling of being crowded or rushed. Staff generally were pleasant and efficient. The hotel was good value given it's overall quality and location and we would use it again. Edinburgh itself is a great city for a short break with plenty to do, and many of the major museums and galleries free!
