what could have been better

Posted 20-Jul-2014
Pros: The price was reasonable for the area, and closer than we thought to museums and other destinations, and the parking helped our travel budget.
Cons: Small things like toilet paper holders, towel racks, and bigger things like a fridge in the room with water.
Location: We walked to the Science & Industry Museum and passed Hyde Park and interesting art galleries. Fairly easy to get and easy access to Lake Shore Drive
Although the hotel is still under construction it was like a new home that had things missing. Toilet paper holder meant the roll had to share space with 4 girls face stuff. No towel racks meant we couldn't re-use our towels. A fridge would have been nice to hold our extra takeout and a bottle of water in same would really have been nice as both vending machines ran out. The bathroom tile and vanity were new and very nice. The staff were all friendly.

Hotel average

Hotel is a bit run down but the price is reasonable. Best part of hotel experience was the free shuttle rides to attractions. Lakeshore cafe was good.

Good Value

Posted 17-Jul-2014
For the price I paid, I was not expecting the Hyatt Regency. I have stayed here before and so I knew it was not going to be great but it would not pretty clean. The hallways showed a little wear and tear but the room and bathroom were much better. They are investing their money in the rooms rather than the outside of the building or hallways. The free parking was great and the hotel staff was very pleasant.

Cheap hotel, close to UChicago

Posted 15-Jul-2014
Pros: Its proximity to the University of Chicago
Cons: I wish the room had been aired out more.
My room smelled very strongly, not in an unclean way, but also not in a pleasant way. Everything worked (toilet, shower, sink, TV, free wi-fi), but there wasn't anything fancy about it. My room was on the first floor, which felt potentially unsafe, but I was OK for the two nights I stayed there. There's a door chain if it makes you feel better, but from what I can tell, half of the rooms are on the first floor. The restaurant attached to the hotel was also fine: a decent place to get a decent meal, though the prices/quality were not noteworthy. The restaurant host was very nice and polite, and I liked the salmon with wild rice. It was a convenient place to get dinner. The best thing about the hotel is probably that it is so close to the University of Chicago, and cheap compared to other nearby hotels. I visited in July, and it was great to be able to get a room on such short notice (only a day in advance). There are a few buses you can take to UChicago, though most of them require at least one transfer. The 192 has no transfers but arrives infrequently. I found it easier just to walk from the hotel to UChicago (about 30 minutes walking, not very complicated streets, not dangerous in the morning or early evening).

Like a motel 6

Posted 14-Jul-2014
Hotel is being renovated but still looks run down with peeling paint and dated exterior. Our room smelled like stale smoke, was small and very basic with no frills. Location is pretty far from shopping and activities. We had to walk across the parking lot to get to our room which had an exterior entrance. Reminded us of a Motel 6.

hotel not as represented on line

Posted 11-Jul-2014
Pros: lady who drove shuttle was VERY nice. She drove better than the cab drivers and was so friendly. Restaurant was nice and service was very good
Cons: attitude of front desk staff could be friendlier and more informed. Hopefully when hotel is remodeled it won't be so shabby looking.
Location: The only thing fairly close was the Museum of Science and Industry. Everything else was an expensive ride to and from the downtown area.
Pool was nice but thought it was indoors. Rooms were clean but shabby, seemed more like a cheap rooming house. Staff were not as friendly as they should be and seemed not to know much about the surrounding area. They didn't offer much more information than yes or no Hotel was apparently undergoing renovations and really should have given a discount to customers who had to stay before the remodel. It was nice to be near the lake however you couldn't get to it from the hotel without walking pretty far. Being right across the road didn't help.

Location: Within a 10 minute cab ride to anywhere along the lake front down town
Across the street from Lake Michigan. 10 miles south of Lincon Park ($20.00 dollar cab ride), 1 mile north of 63rd street beach. About 5 miles from Grant Park. Free parking. Currently under remodel.

View - Great Facility - Mediocre

Posted 07-Jul-2014
Pros: View. Café.
Cons: Lots from appearance of the facility to safety issues.
Location: Walking path along Lake Michigan lots of restaurants and parks in walking distance. Museums Beautiful neighborhood overall.
I was very disappointed with the hotel. The hotel has more of a motel feel. We were given the room next to the parking lot. The main door did not need key card to get in. On our last day there, there was a group of young people drunk coming in and out of one of the rooms next us. They banged on all our doors till 1:30 at night, until police came and escorted them out of the hotel. It not only disturbed our sleep but also made us feel unsafe. There was renovation going on in some parts of the hotel – so hopefully the facility will improve once the renovation is complete. I tried the veggies burger at the hotel café – it was delicious. The view is gorgeous but the hotel needs a lot of upkeep.
