Very beautiful location, nice place

Posted 21-Apr-2015
Pros: scenic view and room quality
Cons: There is no complementary breakfast coffee or tea, so these should be added
The hotel is being renovated so will be an excellent place to stay 10 miles away from downtown area. It is on south lake shore drive and a bus (no.6) runs to downtown two blocks away from hotel. The hotel provides free parking as parking down town area is very expensive. I paid $37 just for two hours. Science museum is just 5 blocks away on the other side of lake shore drive. Two gas stations, one shopping center and McDonald are at walking distances. The cafe of lake shore hotel serves very delicious food, you can enjoy scenic view of Lake Michigan from cafe. I stayed for 6 days and staff is very cooperative and hospitable. I will love to stay in Lake shore in future.

3 stars - this had to be some sort of joke. Last minute booking, but I should have chosen the hostel. "Under Construction" but that's not the half of it - peeling paint, dark halls, locks that don't work, noisy construction staying in the hotel, dingy rooms - this list could go forever. Worst hotel I've stayed in for a very long time.

Several Problems which were not Rectified

Posted 19-Apr-2015
Pros: There's an excellent continental buffet at the next-door cafe (not free but at a discount). Friendly servers and great food!
Cons: As mentioned, prompt attention to maintenance and related issues. More responsiveness on the part of the staff.
Location: The hotel is conveniently located if you need to be at the University of Chicago, or in Hyde Park and neighboring areas generally.
The first thing I noticed is that renovation work is on, and the Reception is in a make-shift area. But that is perhaps unavoidable. The general look of the place is not super-new, but not terrible either. My stay starting going downhill soon after I checked in, when I used the toilet flush, which then refused to turn off. On calling the Reception, I was told that a maintenance person would only be available in the morning (this at 530 in the evening). I told them I was worried the bathroom floor would get flooded; they said there was nothing they could do. Water kept leaking through the course of the night; the problem was finally rectified the next day. While I can't say the staff were rude, what irritated me was the assumption that this wasn't a big deal (though the bathroom was effectively unusable). Another time, both my room keys refused to work; I had to go back to the Reception to get a new one. From the reaction of the staff, it seemed like this was a common problem. Lastly, the staff wasn't particularity helpful when a taxi they had booked for me early morning failed to arrive (not within their control, obviously), though I mentioned I was getting late for a flight. They just gestured vaguely, saying "there's a cab stand down the road". A really, really disappointing experience overall.

Never again. Filth and dirt. Filthy carpet. Ants in the bathroom. The old-sweat smell in the hotel's office. Beds with blankets instead sheets.

Satisfactory. Conveniently close to U. of Chicago

Posted 10-Apr-2015
Pros: Close to University of Chicago
Cons: A bit smoky.
Rooms were correct. Non-Smoking was smoky but the receptionist was quick to change the room without any fuss. Exterior showed signs of age. Restaurant service was good.

bad hotel

Posted 09-Apr-2015
Pros: not much the room seemed clean
Cons: everything and one!
Location: we picked this place because it was close to the museums and ball fields and of course the lake and not to far or close to downtown
We where there for three nights at his place, totally under construction, the small office was full of stuff and people that were not working there, I should have left then but I would have been charged anyway. no one showed or escorted us anywhere. To get to the room on the 4th floor you have to walk under shafting, through a parking garage with old dressers, bed frames and old mattresses, insulation and construction equipment, just to get to the elevator, which anyone one from the street could walk in and use. Room was remolded and seemed to be clean, not very comfortable though, we asked for a king bed got two double and the only other place to sit was a old desk chair. Does have a ice machine but NO vending machines anywhere, when we called and asked where one was they said we had to go to the restaurant on the other side of the hotels. like I said I was VERY DISAPPOINTED IN IT ALL!

Clean Hotel but sketchy neighborhood

Posted 02-Apr-2015
Pros: The room was comfortable and clean.
Cons: The rooms could use a small refrigerator. Also I think the window locks should be improved, since they are right off the sidewalk.
Location: The Lake could be seen from the hotel parking lot, but a silt fence was blocking the view. It's walking distance to restaurants, bus stop, and metra.
The hotel and staff were very nice. However the outside of the hotel was a little scary. My friend and I were actually really scared the first night, because a man kept knocking on our window and door. The locks on the window were simple latches and didn't make us feel safe. Also, the last day we were there our key stopped working an hour before check-out. We had to hold the door open to make sure we could get all our stuff out of the room.

Deceiving online

Posted 01-Apr-2015
I was not prepared for what I saw. The online ratings were deceiving. The room wasn't bad but the outside appearance and atmosphere was so uncomfortable, I still felt uneasy in the room. Maybe after the renovations things will be better.

Not fancy. Otherwise good

Posted 31-Mar-2015
It's an old motel type place that is outdated but the laundry smells nice and the people are pleasant. 15$ cab gets you anywhere in Chicago. Cafe right next door has a buffet open early
