“Did not live up to expectations”
The hotel did not honor my reservation for a river view room; instead giving me a 'city view' which was a view of a dilapidated building and wooden delivery pallets on the ground. When I went to the front desk, both front desk personnel became argumentative. Because I am a very calm person, I didn't understand where this 'attitude' came from. I was willing to take the loss on a prepaid room and go somewhere else, but everything decent was booked. At night, the noise from the nightclub below made sleep difficult. The city itself was wonderful, but I missed out on the full experience that I had been looking forward to. With good hotels in the same area, I would recommend looking into them first rather than risk arrogant hotel staff and not having your room request honored.
“Wonderful Location”
Perfect location, right on the river with scenic views of the river and city. A pleasant path for walking along the river, with outside dining at neighboring cafes. The hotel gave us each free daily pass to the public tram transportation good for the entire day to travel all over the city. Nice restaurant with old style dining room. Comfortable beds. I would definately ecommend staying here when in Basel.
“convenient location with a great view”
Great river view and extremely convenient location with tram and bus stops just outside. Can also walk along the promenade of the river just by going downstairs from the hotel. Front desk was friendly. Room cleaning person not so friendly - she knocked on our door to try to get us up and out early so she could be done with the room! Other than that, no problems. Many museums and architecture to see in and around the city - would take you days just to do that.
“Well located hotel”
This is a comfortable, well located hotel with friendly staff. Car park is a bit too small so had to levae the car keys with the hotel staff to allow them to move care if required but it is secure. Basel (like Switzerland in general) is expensive but this hotel is good value.
“Trying to be more than it actually is”
Other than having probably the best view in Basel, it doesn't impress. And that is if you get the river facing room. For a four star hotel it just looks too tired and is in need of modernization. Our room type had the word grand in it, so we were a little disappointed when it was just a room that was very small. At the reception they explained it's French style, so I guess it has to be tiny then. The bed was quite small and pushed against the wall, TV was tiny. Also a shower curtain (sticks on you when you shower) and a huge old fashioned hair dryer are not things you'd expect in a hotel of this level. The balcony off our room and the view from it were absolutely wonderful though. The location as well is ideal, very central. Overall if you get a good price, it's OK.
“Excellent beliggenhed”
God hotelstandard med fantastisk beliggenhed... fem minutter til alting (næsten). Meget blandet klientel. Uklar definition på Expedia om morgenmad var inkl eller ikke. Opdagede ved morgenmaden, at jeg var den eneste som betalte separat for morgenmad.. I sidste ende var prisen ikke særlig attraktiv når det hele blev lagt sammen.
“Merian: Au coeur du coeur!”
Bon hôtel avec bon accueil,confortable, propre,une vue splendide sur le Rhin. Très bon rapport qualité/prix. A conseiller pour ceux qui veulent être en plein centre-ville et en accepter les quelques rares inconvénients.

“Hotel Merian - Basel”
The hotel service is fine, room clean, location resonably central in Basel. Noteworthy +: complimentaty nespresso on room. However negatives: there is tramway in nearby street with trams passing every 15min through the night and causing significant rumble in the rooms. Even though there were roadworks in front of the hotel with loud noise starting 0630-0645 they rented the rooms on that side of the hotel. No airco so windows open are only access to fresh air - but then you are not isolated agains the noise at all. Free WiFi did not work (but there was a working cabled alternative) On balance: nice room and friendly service can simply not compensate for inability to sleep in the room and a room where you can't sleep is too expensive at any price..
