“Good location and the price reflects it.”

We were swapped to this hotel after a problem with our initial booking and were quite happy with it. It cost more than our original choice and this I put down to the location rather than the standard of the hotel itself. The only niggle that we had was that rooms aren't soundproofed (not great when there is a festival for the Bank Holiday!) Previous reviewers had mentioned having sheers at the window instead of curtains...maybe they didn't find the button for the electric blind.

Area recommendations
As far as Barcelona itself is concerned, we didn't have any problem with pick pockets but we were careful (cross body bag with lots of locking zips etc) We would recommend "La Fonda" restaurant - turn left from the hotel, go down La Ramla until you reach the white statue, turn left and it's a little way along on the right. You may have to queue for a table but it's good food at a reasonable price. If you plan to visit Montjuic castle, take the funicular and then pick up bus 193 from outside the station, rather than use the cable car (it's cheaper). We would also recommend Caixa Forum for the art exhibitions - free and worth the short walk from Placa Espanya, as is the Poble Espanyola, again worth a visit if you're in that part of the city. We did visit the beach but for sunbathing in slightly cooler surrondings, try the park behind the mercat in El Born - very relaxing. If you plan to visit any of the major tourist attractions, either get there early or go later in the day (At the Picasso Museum, the long queue at lunchtime made us defer our visit until 4.00pm when we walked straight in to the ticket office) Overall a great holiday - saw lots, ate lots and did plenty of relaxing.

“Good things about hotel -- good location and good breakfast”

Good location and good breakfast. Other than that, not happy. Our room was so small and noisy and dark. If you're claustrophobic. you could suffocate. Our room was also noisy -- not from the outdoors but from doors opening and closing, staff conversation, guests coming and going, etc. I asked for a quiet room because I read reviews complaining about noise coming from Las Ramblas and they gave us an interior room with no windows -- like a closet. I asked for a change of rooms but they said they were fully booked. Our friends who also had a reservation were taken to an apartelle next door because the hotel said there was something wrong with the electricity and the plumbing of the room assigned to them. The apartelle was okay except that you had to climb up 2 flights of spiral staircases after taking the elevator to the 4th floor. To make matters worse, the elevator broke down. One night, there was no lighting in the stairwell so our friends used the light from their cell phone to see the steps. I would not recommend this hotel.

Area recommendations
Las Ramblas -- lively and exciting, close to a lot of attractions and easy to get public transportation.

“Awesome Location Even better price”

We decided to stay in a hotel on the Ramblas and boy did we ever pick a great one. This hotel is located directly on the Ramblas right where it begins. The hotel has A/C which is hard to find in this area. it came with a great breakfast as well.

Getting around
Use the Hop on Hop off bus at 24 Euros its a great way to get around.

“Barcelona, a life experience”

I try to be more specific on certain matters. Please see my comments on several subjects

Area recommendations
Every area in Barcelona is recommendable. I prefer downtown because of its accesibility either on foot, metro, taxi and bus. Also because old town is maybe, for me, the most enjoyable (Barrio Gótico, Ramblas, Barceloneta, La Boqueria, etc.)
When to go
Any time but winter (Dec, Jan.) unless you are not entitled to open sky activities. Cold and rainy. Better from end March to end september.
Getting there
Direct flight to Barcelona is the best. Airport services are good, transportation to the city is not expensive (in Bus) or not so expensive (in taxi), and it is a short ride (depending upon destination area). From Madrid there is also the AVE train service (high speed), which I have not personally used, but to my knowledge is a very good alternative.
Getting around
Barcelona, as most of spanish cities, is safe, nice, well communicated. You can stroll (in downtown, otherwise strolling can be strenuous) or use a very good metro system or buses. Short distance trains (trenes de cercanías) go from Barcelona to most cities inside Cataluña, most of these cities are at less than 100 km, so you can reach even the fartest (as those located over the french border or the low part of the Pirineos) in less than one or one and a half hours. And of course, there are many points of interest among these cities
What to pack
The smallest amount of items. Better buy something in Barcelona. You will never be satisfied enough.
Must see
Everything. It all depends on the time available. Don't go to Barcelona for less than a week or so. You will be frustrated. Begin with the Sagrada Familia (pay your ticket to go inside, don't go with tours that will allow you to see the two exterior facades only, not the interior). Then try to visit the Parc Guell (if wheater permits), the Casa Batlló (along with the Sagrada Familia, the masterworks of Antoni Gaudí, one of the best architects in the modern world). Visit the Palau de la Musica Catalana (Catalonian Palace of the Music),of one of the others genial architects of the modernism in Cataluña. The Barceloneta and the surrounding port area is a wonderful modernistic area (crowded with tourists all the time). The whole Barrio Gotico is unique. Visit the Cathedral. Visit the church of Santa Maria del Mar (near the Barrio Gotico). Go up to Montjuich, either on foot ascending from the beautiful Plaza de España, or through the Funicular, connected to one Metro station. Go to Monserrat (Metro connects to Renfe stations where you can take the train to Monserrat) for the whole day.

“Great Location”

We chose to stay in Barcelona an extra day before boarding a cruise ship. This hotel is well located. An easy cab ride to the port. The hotel is clean and comfortable. The breakfast is very good with a variety to serve both American and European tastes. Would I stay there again? Certainly!

“Don't stay here”

This is the first time I've been led astray by the ratings. Expedia gave this hotel four stars. I was very disappointed in this hotel. Upon arrival, the front desk personnel seemed aloof and unwelcoming. The atmosphere at the front desk reminded me of a very cheap American roadside motel. They initially gave me a room on the first floor and promply informed me that since I booked through Expedia, I would not be entitled to the complementary breakfast. Ok, no biggie on the breakfast, but I did want a room in a better location. So,after asking, they gave me one on the sixth floor. No offer to help with luggage. Elevators were EXTREMELY small and slow. My room was not a queen bed as I'd requested, but rather two twin beds pushed together. The room was clean enough, but had a cold and unwelcoming vibe. There was a safe in the room as described by the website; however, it required an actual key (no code panel on this safe) which you had to "rent" a couple of euros a day. I needed the safe, so I walked back down to the front desk and requested the key. The key looked like something out of the 19th century. The only plus about this hotel is the location on Las Ramblas, but that is only worth so much. Don't waste your money here - poor facilities and service.

When to go
Don't go to Barcelona in the Summer. It is just too crowded.

“Not sure about the hotel but the apartment was amazing!!”

Upon our arrival we were notified the hotel was overbooked!! However, we were surprised when they put us in amazing apartment in the adjoining building. It was HUGE and beautiful. The only dissapointment was the elevator does NOT take you all the way to the apartment, you have to haul your luggage up and down two flights of stairs. I would have loved to stay in Barcelona longer to enjoy the beautiful apartment.

Must see
The open market right down the street is amazing!!!
