With its vibrant nightlife, fascinating museums and proximity to some of Britain’s most beautiful landscapes and coastlines, Swansea is a great place to go for a holiday.

Sample Swansea’s History and Culture

The great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas affectionately dubbed Swansea as an “ugly, lovely town”, but a lot has changed since he was born more than a hundred years ago. The city is the second largest in Wales and its roots are in the mining industries of the 19th Century when it was known as “Copperopolis”.

In the last decade it has been revitalised by several regeneration schemes that have put a spring in Swansea’s step. Now visitors can enjoy the new Dylan Thomas Centre, which brings to life his work in vivid fashion, the Swansea Museum and the National Waterfront Museum, the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and the Environment Centre.

Although much of Swansea was destroyed during bombing raids of World War Two, there are a few traditional buildings that survive, including the remnants of Swansea Castle, the Morriston Tabernacle nonconformist church and the Guildhall.

Shopping in Swansea

Swansea has more than 230 shops to explore, which should be plenty to keep even the most dedicated shopaholic occupied. To really get a sense of what Swansea is all about, pay a visit to The Market. The largest indoor market in Wales dates back to the Middle Ages and there are more than 100 stalls with fresh local produce including Welsh laverbread, cockles from Penclawdd, Gower salt marsh lamb and Welsh beef. You’ll also find cafes and stalls selling vintage clothes and trendy street fashion.

Nature in Swansea

Swansea’s history as an industrial town might conjure images of dour streets and dark buildings but the city is blessed with more than 50 green spaces, of which five are Green Flag Award-winning parks. The city lies on Swansea Bay, and you can easily reach the five-mile beach that stretches along the bay, full of sand and salty air. With the Gower Peninsula in easy reach, you can also find several interesting castles and the Bronze Age sites at the Llethryd Tooth Cave.

Leisure and Sport in Swansea

There are few places that are better for splashing and frolicking in the water than The LC – an indoor waterpark with a white-knuckle waterslide, wave pool and indoor surf machine. Sports fans also have the chance to visit the 20,000 capacity Liberty Stadium which is home to Premier League club Swansea City, and the Ospreys, a top level rugby club.
