- Corfu Family holidays
Island breaks are always popular with families, and a cheap family package holiday on Corfu Island takes you to one of the best loved destinations in Europe. It's a distinctively shaped island, looking like a horse's leg, with a wide 'thigh' at the top and a narrower 'hoof' at its southern end, which is where the resort of Kavos is found. The long, narrow shape connecting the two means you're never far from the coast, and there are plenty of beach resorts that are perfect for a family summer holiday tanning by the hotel pool or playing down on the sand.
Corfu's ancient history
Corfu's ancient name was Corcyra, named after the mistress of Poseidon, god of the sea. With the water never far from reach, it's easy to see why the Greeks chose this name, and it's a good opportunity to spend family holidays on Corfu teaching your children some of the mythology of the Greek gods, and of Poseidon himself. The name survives to modern times as the slightly different spelling Kerkyra, and this is how you will typically hear the island referred to in its native Greek.
An island in three parts
If your family holiday on Corfu is based in Kavos, you'll be on the flattest part of the island, where it levels off down towards the sea. But further north, Corfu has higher ground too, and the hilly central part is divided from the southern plains by a ridge. For the most dramatic scenery, head to the far north of the island, as the larger inland area at its widest point allows for even higher altitudes, including the mountainous region. It's a varied landscape for an island, and it's unusual to see three such distinct areas of geography, with their boundaries so clearly defined by ridges of high ground.
When should we go?
Most family holidays to Corfu probably depend on the school holidays, and you can expect the availability of good deals to be higher around this time to meet demand - just remember demand will be higher too, so you should book early to avoid missing out on the trip you want. Summer is hot and sunny, with the kind of conditions you'd expect from a popular island destination, but a spring break is a great alternative, especially with younger children who might not cope well with the hottest summer days.
Why Corfu is so great for families
Corfu is surrounded by the beautiful Ionian Sea. These stunning, clear waters are ideal for kids to splash around in, with no great tidal range and small waves. The beaches that border the water aren't too bad either, with golden sands and plenty of family friendly facilities. Kids will love the historic streets of Corfu Town and eating on the waterfront, and with plenty of resorts offering superb family amenities, you can all enjoy your Corfu family holiday the way you want to.
