See a performance in a huge amphitheatre, sample incredible local cuisine and learn exactly why Shakespeare set his famous love story in this beautiful medieval city.

Verona is an iconic city with a rich culture, beautiful architecture and a fine local cuisine. It was in Verona that Shakespeare set his classic love story, Romeo and Juliet. All you have to do is walk through the city’s cobblestone streets and you’ll quickly get a sense of the romance that inspired this story.

Start your visit to the city at the Piazza BraOpens in a new window, the largest piazza in the city and maybe even the country. The square is located just behind the gates of Verona, and is lined by restaurants, bars and major attractions. The monumental Arena di Verona, one of the largest amphitheatres in Italy, dominates the eastern side of the square. The ancient Roman amphitheatre is still a working venue today and plays host to plenty of international artists every year, including Muse and Pearl Jam. Why not coincide your visit with a show by your favourite performer?

Verona's cobbled streets are beautiful to explore on foot. The city is flat, unlike many other ancient cities in Italy, making it much easier to explore. On top of the major sites like the amphitheatre, there are a number of other interesting attractions, such as the Museo di Castel Vecchio, an art collection in a historic castle. Admire the architecture of the Duomo di Verona and attend a morning service by the bishop of Verona. Then of course there’s Juliet’s house, complete with balcony.

Experience the lively atmosphere of the Piazza delle ErbeOpens in a new window, a central square with a daily market. Buy some local vegetables from the stalls or dine at one of the restaurants along the square. Verona is renowned for its northern Italian cuisine, often based on rice. Order a hearty risotto with local mushrooms and truffles.
