Neubrandenburg is a town with a population of 65 000 on the banks of the Tollensesee Lake in North-East Germany. Mention of the town was first made in the 13th century and its medieval charm is still very obvious today. Neubrandenburg bears the nickname of "Town of the Four Gates" because of its breathtaking town gates which survive as part of the medieval town walls. Picturesque houses from yesteryear line many of the town's streets and there are many traditional restaurants and little museums awaiting discovery.
Take a stroll along the old town walls and enjoy the magical architecture on display. Looking at the town, you will spot a number of black-and-white half-timbered houses, the so-called Wiekhäuser, which are guard houses built into the town walls during the 14th and 15th centuries. It takes around an hour to cover the 1.4 miles of the town walls, but it is worth it, as is popping into the town's Regional Museum along the way. The museum is found in the spectacular Treptower Gate. The museum's exhibitions will help you discover more about the history of Neubrandenburg and the surrounding region.
Those with a taste for culture should visit the town's art collection, housed in an 18th-century building. Here you will find different sculptures, paintings and drawings on display. For music lovers, Neubrandenburg offers a variety of performances in the Konzertkirche St. Marien, a church constructed in the 13th century which today serves as a concert hall.
If you find yourself hankering for fresh air while on your travels, a few hours by the Tollensesee Lake will definitely do you good. The crystal-clear lake is surrounded by walking and cycle paths, and in summer you can take a swim here or paddle around in a kayak. Alternatively, of course, you can simply lie down on the lake's banks and daydream among the area's many varieties of flower.
