Leave civilisation far behind and enter a world of crystal-clear lagoons, dramatic volcanic landscapes and gigantic manta rays.

The Yasawa Islands are a chain of 20 islands covering 50 miles (80 kilometers) of the Pacific Ocean. These islands were formed millions of years ago through volcanic activity and are bordered by stunning coral reefs. With plenty of environments and resorts to choose from, the Yasawas are perfect for all tastes and budgets.

This group of Islands has some of the best snorkeling in Fiji. Local favorites include bays around Naviti Island and the Blue Lagoon, made famous by the 1980 film of the same name. Catch a boat down to Manta Ray Lagoon, between Nanuya Balavu and Drawaqa islands. Or, swim with manta rays that can reach over 22-feet (seven-meters) wide.

Pull on some flippers and dive into the renowned scuba spots on the outer reefs. Explore underwater caves off Nacula Island or swim around the volcanic spires that rise from the sea floor. If you’ve never experienced the thrill of diving, many resorts have qualified instructors and plenty of equipment to guide you through your first experience.

Above the water, take your pick from sea kayaking, jet skiing or wakeboarding. The fishing is also excellent around the islands and boat charters leave regularly. Haul your catch back to your resort to have it expertly barbecued for your dinner. Back on dry land, hike up the hills of Nacula, Waya or Wayasewa islands for incredible views of the entire island chain.

If swaying in a hammock is more your style, there really is no better place to chill out in a warm breeze. Sea temperatures rarely drop below 78°F (25°C) and the air temperature is always warm. Relax under the shady palms or enjoy a massage on the beach. Once the sun goes down, sip on a coconut cocktail at one of the many beach bars throughout the island resorts.

The Yasawa Flyer catamaran runs daily from Port Denarau and stops at most major resorts in the islands. The Flyer takes three to four hours to reach the Yasawa Islands, so plan to stay for a few days. Resorts range from exclusive to budget dorm rooms, and everything in between.
