Oktoberfest, one of the most exciting annual events in Europe, is on its way! With festivities commencing on 22 September and running right through until 7 October, it’s going to draw in revellers from all corners of the world. They’ll be carrying on an exhilarating tradition that goes right back to 1810, when the original Oktoberfest was held to celebrate a royal wedding.

Eat, Drink and be Merry in Munich

Oktoberfest is about far more than just great German beer. It’s a folk festival of epic proportions, spread out across a field that’s conveniently close to the city centre. This proximity means you can also make time to explore the many attractions of Munich while you’re there. The festival itself is set across numerous lavish tents, where you can feast on everything from pork knuckles to giant pretzels while listening to live music, watching colourful Bavarian parades and enjoying typical Oktoberfest events like the thrilling crossbow competition of Armbrustschützen-Festhalle. You can also get stuck into the fairground rides that help make Oktoberfest such a hit with families – they range from quaint, traditional carousels to spooky ghost trains.

Discovering More of Germany

Keen to see more of the country while you’re there? You can put aside the dirndls and lederhosen of Oktoberfest and set out on road trips to see other great destinations. North of Munich, you can visit Nordtstadt in Nuremberg, a district that puts you within a stone’s throw of iconic attractions like Nuremberg Castle. Or, you can head south west to Fuessen, a picture-postcard Bavarian town bedecked with ornate architecture and cobbled streets. Here, you’ll be just minutes from Neuschwanstein Castle, one of the most romantic and ravishing landmarks on the continent. You can also chill out at Hopfen Am See, a serene spa resort area on the shores of a shimmering lake.
