About this property

Rural cottage retreat between York and Harrogate.

  • Boutique 18th Century Cottage with Log Burner, Gated Parking & Parkland Views

Ideally located between York & Harrogate

Welcome to Tanyard Cottage, a beautifully styled 18th-century detached cottage in the picture-postcard village of Whixley. This charming retreat blends historic character with modern comforts, offering an elegant and tranquil escape in an idyllic rural setting.

Tanyard Cottage is part of a historic cluster including Tanyard House and Tanyard Barn, each with its own story. The property takes its name from the village tannery that once operated here, where hides were transformed into strong leather — a skilled craft central to village life. Tanyard Barn, now a converted holiday let, was once the 19th-century village pub, The Crown, a lively hub for locals. Nearby, the old well in Tanyard Cottage (and the larger well beneath Tanyard House) supplied water for both the tannery and pub, offering a tangible link to centuries of village history.

The buildings were fully renovated in 2014, bringing them back to life while preserving their heritage. Every beam, wall, and feature has been lovingly restored, combining authentic historic character with modern comfort. These properties have been welcoming guests as holiday lets since 2015, consistently earning 5-star listings on other hosting sites.

Michelle has done a magnificent job of creating a very relaxing home away from home. The cottage was immaculately clean, stocked with thoughtful items, and felt most welcoming. I would recommend this stay to anyone hoping for a peaceful and safe place to unwind. It was nice to be able to visit York for the day and retreat to the cottage in the evening. Michelle's kindness and generosity was very much appreciated.
