Lawrence having described the sands as home to “deep pock-holes that were full of brilliantly clear water and delicately-coloured shells and tiny, crimson anemones”. After settlement, the area was first named Sidmouth, and by the 1860s it was known as North Bulli. The name Austinmer was officially adopted in 1895\.
