The futons were very comfortable, as well. It's a little outside of Wakayama city (about 30 minutes/¥3500 by taxi), but there is a nearby bus and they have a parking area if you are driving. The staff speaks a little English, but don't expect the same level of English that you might get at a larger, urban hotel. Used the shuttle but we were not provided with the pick up location which was very difficult to find. Make sure you book it as it only leaves once a day. The room had no hot water, even though we were informed to run the tap. The heater was in need of cleaning. Very isolated location with no access to other food options. We used the private open air bath, which was pleasant. The building is very old and our room on the lower level had a very musty smell covered by excessive camphor. The reception is on the 6th floor, and our room was on the first floor - very strange, with no elevator going to the lower levels. It made for a difficult and awkward descent and climb for me, as I have respiratory problems. While breakfast was generous, we found the price to be quite steep for a ryokan with no dinner included.
