Villaviciosa is an Asturian town bathed by the Cantabrian Sea whose name means “fertile village”. If it stands out for one reason, it’s for its natural attractions. An example of this is the majestic Rodiles beach on the eastern coast of Asturias. Approximately 3,250 feet of fine, golden sands and waves that mean you can enjoy a range of sports, such as surfing. Bring your swimsuit and a good book and enjoy our cheap trips to Villaviciosa. If you head south, you’ll reach Ría de Villaviciosa Nature Reserve, which spans over 4 square miles. This place holds great biological interest with plenty of secrets in store for you to uncover as you go. Be sure to bring your binoculars and camera, as you’ll have the chance to spot numerous migratory water birds. If you feel like staying indoors for a bit, you can always visit El Conventín, a religious building with pre-Romanesque architecture that was consecrated in 893\. Its name literally means “the small convent”, and refers to its small size. Although it’s now a single building, studies show it may have been part of a Palatine complex. Its state of conservation is excellent, and inside you’ll also find some really beautiful elements. Nearby you’ll find the monastery of Santa María de Valdediós, which is how the first monks who inhabited this green and lush valley named it (“valley of God”). This Cistercian-style site built at the beginning of the 13th century is perfectly conserved to this day. Guided tours are usually organised here where you can learn about all the secrets and ask any questions you might have. In the area you’ll also find some of the best Asturian *llagares*, traditional cider breweries. No package deal to Villaviciosa would be complete without trying a glass of this typical drink, which is made by fermenting the juice of squeezed apples.
